About the Item

Award-winning Hopi silversmith Roy Talaheftewa has created these exceptional signature dangle earrings, distinguished by their remarkable detail and masterful craftsmanship. Each earring features a tufa-cast Hopi figure rendered in a distinctive geometric style. The figures suspend from domed, highly polished sterling silver post studs, connected by a simple bail that allows for elegant movement. The contrast between the textured cast surface and the smooth, polished elements enhances the visual depth of the design. The artist’s hallmark is stamped on the verso. Dimensions • Total Length: 3” • Top Studs (Posts): ½” x ½” • Earring Back Type: Standard Post • Weight: 0.7 oz • Signed: Yes Technique: Tufa Casting Tufa casting is a traditional Southwestern silversmithing technique in which molten silver is poured into a hand-carved mold made from porous tufa stone. Because each mold is destroyed during the casting process, every piece is inherently one of a kind, preserving the direct imprint of the artist’s hand. The resulting surface displays a rich, organic texture and depth unique to this method. About the Artist Roy Talaheftewa is a Hopi silversmith born in 1955 in Shungopvi, a village on Second Mesa, and a member of the Young Corn Clan. He developed an early interest in jewelry-making by observing accomplished silversmiths within his community. He later attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where he was influenced by the artistic vision of Allan Houser. Over time, Roy established himself as an award-winning artist whose work is collected internationally. While grounded in Hopi tradition, Talaheftewa has expanded beyond classic overlay techniques, incorporating tufa casting as well as combining sterling silver with 14K gold and a variety of gemstones. He is particularly drawn to materials such as coral, lapis, natural turquoise, and opals, often integrating them into contemporary designs. Roy began his professional career in the 1970s and gained significant recognition early on. At the 1981 Heard Museum Indian Art Show, he received Best of Division, Best of Classification, and Best of Show—an extraordinary achievement that established his reputation. In addition to his work as a jeweler, Roy remains deeply committed to his community. He is actively involved with the Hopi Pu’tavi Project, Inc., where he teaches silversmithing to Hopi youth, and continues to advocate for and support Hopi artists on Second Mesa.
