About the Item

Antique Iberian Baroque Drop Earrings — Silver, Gold, Colombian Emeralds & Point-Cut and Table-Cut Diamonds, c. 1680–1740 A magnificent pair of antique Iberian Baroque articulated drop earrings, dating to approximately 1680–1740, representing the finest tradition of Spanish or Portuguese ceremonial jewellery of the period. Each earring is composed of two articulated flower-shaped rosettes in oxidised silver with gold borders, suspended from a gold hoop fitting of early dormeuse type. The silver body of each rosette is set with twelve diamonds in point-cut and table-cut — the oldest diamond cuts known — creating a richly textured, sculptural surface of exceptional refinement and historical significance. At the centre of each rosette sits a table-cut emerald of intense vivid green, bezel-set in a finely worked gold mount with double twisted wire border. The emeralds display the characteristic inclusions and rich colour saturation consistent with Colombian origin, as was overwhelmingly prevalent in Iberian jewellery of this period, when Colombian emeralds arrived via the Spanish trade routes from the New World. The reverse of each earring is fully gilded and engraved with radial and crosshatch motifs, indicative of high-quality workshop production. The articulation between the two rosette bodies is achieved through a gold link, allowing natural movement when worn. Earrings of this typology — combining silver, gold mounts, table-cut Colombian emeralds and point-cut diamonds — appear in noble Spanish and Portuguese inventories of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and are documented in Iberian court portraiture of the period. A piece of remarkable presence, rarity and historical significance. **DETAILS:** - **Period:** c. 1680–1740, Baroque - **Origin:** Iberian Peninsula (Spain or Portugal) - **Materials:** Silver, gold, diamonds, emeralds - **Emeralds:** 4 table-cut emeralds, vivid green, probable Colombian origin, untested - **Diamonds:** 48 point-cut and table-cut diamonds (12 per rosette × 4 rosettes), untested - **Closure:** Early dormeuse-type gold hoop - **Weight:** 31.24 grams (pair) - **Dimensions:** 5.20 × 2 cm - **Hallmarks:** One earring bears a hallmark in oval cartouche with crosshatch field and central figure, consistent with Iberian assay marks of the 17th–18th century.
