About the Item

Behold: authentic, pristine, and breathtaking: a pair of Georgian Stuart Crystal Earrings with Large Natural Saltwater Baroque Pearls, High Karat Gold. Crafted between 1780–1820, these are extraordinary museum-worthy Georgian earrings combining two of the rarest survivals from the period: Stuart crystals and true natural, non-cultured saltwater pearls. A pairing this intact is almost unheard of on today’s market. This exceedingly rare pair of late-18th to early-19th century Stuart crystal earrings, set in high-karat yellow gold and suspending suspending two large, natural Pinctada saltwater pearls, each with mesmerizing orient and luminous nacre. These earrings are a showcase of Georgian jewelry at its most poetic, symbolic, and technically accomplished. Weighing 6 and 7 grams respectively, each earring is approximately 38mm in length. Stuart Crystals: Each earring features a beautifully clear 9mm x 8mm emerald-cut rock crystal with a vivid internally framed compartment, still preserving its original black ground and gold cipher — a mourning or loyalty motif symbolic of constancy and eternal devotion. The crystals are undamaged, unusually clear, and beautifully proportioned. Dangling from each crystal is a magnificent natural pearl that our Certified Professional Gemologist with advanced training in pearls has determined to be natural (non-nucleated) baroque saltwater pearl, approx. 14 × 19 mm, formed by Pinctada species of oyster. They exhibit high luster and orient -the spectral display of light that seems to occur just below the surface of the pearl; a stunningly beautiful phenomenon seen in natural, uncultured pearls and early cultured pearls that were left longer in the water to develop the thicker nacre required for the spectral display to occur. These pearls, being natural, have spirals of growth rings (pearls spin as they form), natural surface blemishes and imperfections -which we show clearly in the images-- but no damage. The pitting you see is natural and not from damage. There is no evidence of repair or restoration. To encounter even one natural Georgian-era saltwater baroque of this scale is exceptional. To find a near-matched pair, still on their original Stuart crystal tops, borders on miraculous. Created in the high-karat yellow gold (typical of Georgian jewels; testing consistent with 18k–22k. Handmade mounts, closed-back settings, and early ear fittings consistent with c. 1780–1820 workmanship. I acquired these earrings from one of America's most respected dealers of antiquities; they purchased the pair in London on their most recent trip. I've purchased many spectacular items from this specific husband and wife over the last 20 years and when I saw these in their showroom on the very day they brought them out, I had to have them. I have always loved rare things. Natural pearls of this size are vanishingly rare — they predate pearl farming entirely. Stuart crystals in earrings are scarcer than rings or brooches. A complete pair surviving intact, with original motifs and no missing elements, is virtually unheard of. Pieces of this caliber appear in major museum collections (V&A, Fitzwilliam, British Museum), but seldom in private hands. A rare opportunity to capture an exquisite jewel from the distant, distant past.
