About the Item

This unique Jugendstil Art Nouveau period early-20th-Century intricate sterling pendant with celestial-motif openwork recalling shape-shifting bats in flight by master silversmith German Theodor Fahrner features a bezel-set gold-mounted moonstone oval cabochon at its center. Some of his documented work likewise features stylized bat wings or featured openwork sterling decorated with marcasites, moonstone and vermeil. One of our photos shows a clearly marked necklace by him featuring tiny silver bat pendants, whose choker sold for the listing price of $8,200 on 1stDibs. Our pendant, which converts to a brooch, is artfully surrounded by a swirling asymmetric abstract pattern with undulating points decorated with dozens of shimmering golden marcasites, along with granulation and chasing. Worn as a pendant, the vertical shape could be perceived as a stylized letter "S". The vermeil center of the back is stamped with a rectangular sterling mark below an indistinguishable word. Under the middle of the brooch pin by the open-backed moonstone is the designer's smaller circle mark that includes his overlapping two initials that share the same dark intersecting straight lines, which is best seen in our upside-down photo of the brooch position. There appears to be at least two other smaller side-by-side stamps closer to the silver-fineness mark. The marks are unclear because the surfaces are not flat.
