A Victorian Renaissance revival gem-set pendant, the central cushion shaped faceted ruby set to the centre of an old brilliant-cut diamond encrusted yellow gold 8-point star, set with pearls, rubies and diamonds, set between green and blue guilloche enamel surrounds, all suspended from a yellow gold foliate design, surmounting a three pearl drop, all stones set to yellow gold, circa 1850, measuring 4.2 x 2.5cm, gross weight 13.8 grams This antique pendant is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested a 18ct gold. A gorgeous and dramatic mid nineteenth century Renaissance revival pendant. Renaissance revival pendants, also called Holbeinesque pendants, became very popular in the Victorian era as Victorian jewellers discovered sketches of jewellery made by the Northern Renaissance painter Hans Holbein while at the Tudor court in England. This pendant features a central cushion-cut ruby surrounded by a star of scintillating diamonds. Fine enamel detail and further rubies and diamonds as well as lustrous pearls adorn this ornate pendant. This exquisitely crafted and detailed pendant comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III.
