About the Item

This large intaglio was hand carved towards thew end of the eighteenth century or the very beginning of the nineteenth century. 1800 out of a large flat chalcedony cabochon. The carving depicts Venus and Cupid. Cupid, is holding his torch with his left hand. With his right hand he takes the left hand of the goddess of love by her left hand. Venus and Cupid were a popular theme in art history throughout the centuries. This unmounted stone was most certainly a token of lobve might have been intended for a piece of jewellery, possibly a ring. Alternatively it could have been intended for a fob seal or a desk top seal. Intaglios from antiquity or in classical revival style were very fashionable at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century.
