This magnificent Oil on Board Country (Rural) Landscape Scene painting was created by impressionist Herman Pekel (Australian-Dutch) in 1992 The painting is signed & dated verso Dimensions: 59cm x 89cm Frame: 73cm x 103cm Herman, born in Melbourne in 1956, was just 17 years old when he held his first solo exhibition in the city, which was a resounding success. He spent three years studying and painting in Amsterdam and London, where the works of artists like Constable, Turner, and Rembrandt left a lasting impression on him. Upon returning to Melbourne in 1982, he pursued a fine arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. During this time, he studied under contemporary artists such as Dale Hickey, Jeff Makin, and Clifton Pugh, who played a key role in shaping his appreciation for contemporary art and encouraging his exploration of abstract impressionism. Herman’s tonal works, created in both oil and watercolour, cover a wide range of subjects, from urban landscapes and cityscapes to café and bar interiors, as well as dynamic industrial scenes. These pieces exemplify the finest qualities of contemporary impressionism. A highly awarded artist, Herman is a three-time recipient of the CamberwellGold Medal Art Prize and was honored with the prestigious Alice Bale Award in 1989 and 1993. His work has been featured in several notable publications, including “Australian Impressionist and Realist Artists” (compiled by Tom Roberts), “120 Years of Watercolours” by the Australian Realist Artists, “Artists and Galleries of Australia and New Zealand” by Max Germaine, and “Profile on Contemporary Watercolours”. Recognized for his exceptional talent and insight, Herman continues to exhibit his work both in Australia and internationally. His paintings are held in prestigious collections, including Artbank, the Castlemaine Regional Gallery, the Grafton Regional Gallery, the Bathurst Regional Gallery, and numerous public and private collections worldwide.
