Edwardian GIA Certified 13 Carat Unheated Ceylon Sapphire, circa 1900, Post Civil War, American, Melee Old European Cut Diamonds on Platinum An exceptional American Edwardian platinum ring, circa 1900, centered by an impressive approximately 13-carat natural unheated blue sapphire from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), accompanied by a GIA Sapphire Origin Report. The magnificent cushion-shaped sapphire measures 13.34 × 13.46 × 10.24 mm and displays a beautiful natural blue color with remarkable presence. The gemstone features a modified brilliant-cut crown and step-cut pavilion, producing broad flashes of blue as the ring moves in the light. According to GIA Report No. 6173100503, dated April 16, 2015, the center gemstone is: Species: Natural Corundum Variety: Natural Sapphire Geographic Origin: Sri Lanka Treatment: No Indications of Heating Color: Blue Transparency: Transparent Shape: Cushion Crown: Modified Brilliant Cut Pavilion: Step Cut Measurements: 13.34 × 13.46 × 10.24 mm The absence of heat treatment is particularly significant. Fine sapphires have historically been heated to improve their color and appearance, making large natural Sri Lankan sapphires that retain their original untreated character increasingly desirable among collectors. The sapphire is preserved in an elaborate American-made platinum filigree mounting dating to approximately 1900, during the transition from the late Victorian period into the Edwardian era. The handcrafted setting is richly decorated with openwork platinum and numerous natural antique diamonds, including Old European-cut and early six-facet and rose-cut diamonds. Rather than overwhelming the center stone, the intricate diamond-set filigree forms an architectural frame around the sapphire. The open gallery, scrolling platinum work, and individually set antique diamonds are characteristic of the highly detailed hand craftsmanship found in important American jewelry of the period. The ring weighs approximately 10.5 grams and is currently a US finger size 7. A remarkable survivor from the post-Civil War generation of American jewelry craftsmanship, this ring combines three increasingly difficult qualities to find together: an exceptionally large natural unheated Ceylon sapphire, independent GIA confirmation of Sri Lankan origin and no heat treatment, and an elaborate antique platinum and diamond setting. An extraordinary collector's jewel and a superb example of turn-of-the-century American gemstone jewelry.
