About the Item

Period: Circa 9th/11th Century AD. Finger size: 8.5. Weight: 6.4. The ring, made of 22-karat gold, can be dated around the 9th – 10th century and ascribed to Viking manufacture, which is characterised by a wide use of filigree and, more generally, of thin metal bands twisted to form – as in this case – a very elegant spiral with a raised central back. It is interesting to note the use of gold, extremely rare and expensive at the time, and therefore reserved for the wealthier social classes, although for Norse culture metals also represented the soul of the earth and gold, consequently, became a symbol of the gods. Furthermore, the spiral shape recalls the iconography of a serpent which, in Viking culture, was a symbol of cyclicality and cosmic strength, as well as being often associated with deities typical of Nordic devotion.
