About the Item

A rare and evocative Georgian mourning ring (circa 1760–1780), featuring a finely rendered figural scene of a woman leaning on a pedestal—a classical allegory of grief and remembrance—set against a rich blue enamel ground and preserved beneath a protective glass pane. Such pictorial mourning jewels were commissioned to commemorate the deceased and reflect the 18th-century fascination with classical symbolism, sentiment, and allegory. The ring is crafted in low-carat gold (~3k), consistent with Georgian construction, and is accompanied by its original fitted box, a remarkable survival that significantly enhances both its historical importance and collector appeal. The face of the ring measures approximately 1.3 inches by 0.85 inches wide and is a size 5.5. The metal has been professionally evaluated using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis and traditional jeweler’s testing, confirming its period-appropriate gold composition. The ring is in good antique condition with some light surface wear and some dust behind the panel of the ring.

1776 Georgian Era White Enamel Mourning Ring of 20k Gold

1776 Georgian Era White Enamel Mourning Ring of 20k Gold

Located in Lewisburg, PA

A rare and historically evocative Georgian mourning ring dated 1776, crafted in 20 karat gold and adorned with white enamel, a color traditionally associated with remembrance and purity. The band bears the inscription “Wm McPHEADRIS ESQ: OB: 14 JAN: 1776 AET :55,” commemorating the life and passing of William McPhaedris at the age of 55—an intimate and poignant artifact of 18th-century memorial tradition. William McPheadris, Esq. was a member of London’s prestigious Inner Temple and son of John McPheadris. John's brother was Captain Archibald MacPheadris, a wealthy merchant and member of the King’s Council in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, whose home—now known as the Warner House—is a National Historic Landmark. Dated 1776—the pivotal year of American independence and now its 250th anniversary—this ring embodies a striking transatlantic narrative, linking the British legal world with prominent colonial families at the very moment the two were being irrevocably divided. The use of white enamel is particularly meaningful, signifying that he died unmarried, a detail that aligns with his known biography. The ring measures 3mm in width and weighs 5.41 grams, offering a refined and understated presence consistent with Georgian mourning jewelry...
