About the Item

Period: I century A.D. Ring size: 4,5 Weight: 3,4 gr The Roman ring dates around the 1st century and is characterised by a yellow gold frame in which a cabochon garnet is adjourned, embellished with an exemplary engraving of the profile of an eagle, which was an attribute of Jupiter and a symbol of the power of the emperors. The eagle, in fact, was considered a protection of the gods over the legions, to such an extent that each of them possessed one: the eagle, therefore, was carried into battle and had to be protected even at the cost of the soldiers' lives, since its death would have been a harbinger of misfortune. Since each legion was equipped with an eagle, it thus became an imperial emblem that can be seen on countless monuments, coins and precious stones, such as the aforementioned garnet. The ring appears to be in excellent conservative condition and its excellent engraving quality is evident, whose mastery is clearly recognizable in its ability to restore great naturalism to the eagle's profile: great attention is paid to the natural data and details, evident in the meticulously described plumage and beak.
