About the Item

Title: French Architectural Gateway Ink Drawing 1986 by Bernard Labbe Artist: Bernard Labbe (French, mid 20th century) Medium: Ink on paper, presented in original mount, unframed Size: 12.75 x 10.25 inches (height x width) (sheet including mount) Signed: signed lower left “Bernard Labbe 1986” Stamped: Verso Condition: good overall; presented in original mount with some surface marks and light staining to mount; minor wear consistent with studio handling; artwork itself well preserved Provenance: the artists atelier/ studio, France Description: A finely executed architectural drawing by Bernard Labbe, dated 1986, depicting a fortified gateway or historic stone structure rendered in detailed ink linework. The composition is built through dense cross-hatching and precise pen work, creating strong contrasts between light and shadow across the stone surfaces. The perspective draws the viewer inward through the central archway, giving the piece a sense of depth and structure. Unlike the looser sketchbook studies, this work shows a higher level of refinement and control, suggesting it was intended as a more resolved drawing. The sky is treated with stylised linear patterning, contrasting with the solidity of the architecture and adding a subtle graphic quality to the composition. Presented within its original mount, the work has a more formal, finished presence, reinforcing its position within Labbe’s architectural output. The signature and date further distinguish it from unsigned studio studies. A strong and characterful example of mid-century French architectural drawing, appealing to collectors of European townscapes, ink work, and structured compositions.

Title: French Architectural Balcony Red Roof Building Ink Watercolour Painting Artist: Bernard Labbe, French mid 20th century Medium: Watercolour and ink on paper, unframed Size: 10.75 x 8.25 inches Signature: Unsigned to the front Stamped verso: Stamped verso with the artist’s atelier stamp Provenance: The artist’s atelier studio, France, stamped verso Condition: Good vintage condition overall. The sheet shows light age toning, minor handling marks and some studio marks verso, consistent with age and storage. There is slight edge and corner wear visible in the photographs. The painted image remains bright, detailed and well presented. Description: A striking original French architectural study by Bernard Labbe, depicting a tall building facade with a red tiled roof, projecting balcony, shutters and sharply angled walls. The work is executed in watercolour and ink, with the artist combining careful architectural line drawing with expressive colour washes in blue, terracotta, ochre and soft grey. The subject has strong appeal for collectors of French architectural paintings, balcony scenes, town house facades, red roof buildings, urban studies and original mid century works on paper. The composition is unusually vertical and highly graphic, focusing on the dramatic geometry of the building rather than a wider street view. Labbe uses strong ink hatching to define shadow, depth and texture across the tiled roof, stone walling, balcony rails and recessed windows. The red roof and warm brickwork contrast beautifully with the cooler blue washes at the side of the building, giving the work a lively balance between structure and atmosphere. The slightly abstracted background allows the building to stand forward, making the piece both architectural and decorative. Bernard Labbe was based around the Laval and L’Huisserie areas of Mayenne in the Pays de Loire. Many works from this collection bear his atelier stamp and were originally kept within the artist’s studio archive. Labbe exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1951 and was associated with the Centre de Liaison des Artistes Paris from 1982. He also appeared in L’Annuaire National des Beaux Arts from 1970, including French, German and American editions. His exhibitions included Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Deauville, Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon and Marseille. This original work reflects Labbe’s strong interest in architecture, perspective and the character of French town buildings. The balcony, roofline, shutters and layered facades give the painting a distinctive sense of place, while the confident use of ink brings energy and precision to the scene. It would appeal particularly to collectors looking for French architectural watercolours...
