Edward Dufner (1872 - 1957) Monhegan Island, Maine Watercolor on paper Sight 16 x 20 inches Signed lower right With a long-time career as an art teacher and painter of both 'light' and 'dark', Edward Dufner was one of the first students of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy to earn an Albright Scholarship to study painting in New York. In Buffalo, he had exchanged odd job work for drawing lessons from architect Charles Sumner. He also earned money as an illustrator of a German-language newspaper, and in 1890 took lessons from George Bridgman at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. In 1893, using his scholarship, Dufner moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied with Henry Siddons Mowbray, figure painter and muralist. He also did illustration work for Life, Harper's and Scribner's magazines. Five years later, in 1898, Dufner went to Paris where he studied at the Academy Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and privately with James McNeill Whistler. Verification of this relationship, which has been debated by art scholars, comes from researcher Nancy Turk who located at the Smithsonian Institution two 1927 interviews given by Dufner. Turk wrote that Dufner "talks in detail about Whistler, about how he prepared his canvasas and about numerous pieces he painted. . . A great read, the interview puts to bed" the ongoing confusion about whether or not he studied with Whistler. This summer landscape with horses grazing in a paddock under the rays of the sun beside a rural farmstead is a finely executed drawing in brown, signed lower right by Swedish female artist Ester Almqvist (1869-1934). A winding path leads the viewer into the composition, where buildings, fences, and vegetation define a cultivated countryside. Two horses stand quietly within the enclosed field, their forms rendered with spare yet assured lines. Above them, the sun shines from a clear sky, its rays spreading outward in rhythmic, hand-drawn strokes that cover all of the sky. The composition is built through a lively and vibrating pen line, where hatching and linear repetition create both texture and luminosity. The warm sepia tone unifies the scene, while the expressive draughtsmanship conveys a sense of immediacy and presence. The motif is elevated through a distinctly personal interpretation of landscape and light. Ester Dorothea Almqvist was born in 1869 in Bromma, Stockholm and died in 1934 in Lund, south Sweden. She emerged as a significant figure in Swedish art at the turn of the twentieth century, initially associated with the National Romantic movement, before later contributing to the introduction of modernist tendencies in Sweden through a highly individual synthesis of Neo Impressionist and Expressionist elements. Her early life was shaped by a religious and intellectually engaged environment. Almqvist lived her entire life with a physical disability caused by a spinal deformity, which limited her mobility but did not prevent her from pursuing an artistic career. Following her mother’s death, Almqvist broke with her earlier environment and relocated to Skåne, where she would spend the greater part of her professional life. The landscapes of southern Sweden became central to her artistic production and provided the basis for many of her most characteristic works. Her artistic education began at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm (1888–1891), where she received foundational training in drawing and design. She continued her studies through private lessons with the history painter Gustaf Cederström, but chose not to apply to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Instead, she pursued further training at Valand Art School in Gothenburg, where instruction was led by prominent artists such as Carl Larsson and Richard Bergh. She also studied for a period at the Konstnärsförbundet’s school (Artists' Association), under the guidance of Per Hasselberg and Bruno Liljefors...

Reginald Marsh, 1898 – 1954 Monseigneur News Theatre, 1925 Signed and dated at lower right: 'Reginald Marsh 1925' Watercolor on card 8 x 11 inches Born in Paris to parents who were American artists, Reginald Marsh became an adept illustrator at an early age. His family returned to the United States in 1900. Upon graduating from Yale University, Marsh moved to New York and in 1922 took a job as an illustrator at the New York Daily News. For the paper he provided cartoons of vaudeville and burlesque shows. In 1925 Marsh went to work for a new magazine -- The New Yorker -- as one of its original cartoonists. That same year he married Betty Burroughs, daughter of the paintings curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Later that year they traveled to Europe where Marsh discovered the work of the old masters at the Louvre in Paris and British museums. With a sketchbook always on hand, he wandered the streets of Europe and began depicting bums or what he called figures of failure. Upon the couple’s return, Marsh, now with a serious interest in pursuing art, enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied under George Luks, John Sloan, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. Their father was an accountant in the employ of a major company in Le Havre. The Dufy family was musically gifted: his father was an organist, as was his brother Léon, and his youngest brother Gaston was an accomplished flautist who later worked as a music critic in Paris. Raoul Dufy's studies were interrupted at the age of 14, when he had to contribute to the family income. He took a job with an importer of Brazilian coffee, but still found time from 1892 to attend evening courses in drawing and composition at the local college of fine arts under Charles Marie Lhullier, former teacher of Othon Friesz and Georges Braque. He spent his free time in museums, admiring the paintings of Eugène Boudin in Le Havre and The Justice of Trajan in Rouen. A municipal scholarship enabled him to leave for Paris in 1900, where he lodged initially with Othon Friesz. He was accepted by the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Léon Bonnat, whose innate conservatism prompted Dufy to remark later that it was 'good to be at the Beaux-Arts providing one knew one could leave'. And leave he did, four years later, embarking with friends and fellow students on the rounds of the major Paris galleries - Ambroise Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Eugène Blot and Berheim-Jeune. For Dufy and his contemporaries, Impressionism represented a rejection of sterile academism in favour of the open-air canvases of Manet, the light and bright colours of the Impressionists, and, beyond them, the daringly innovative work of Gauguin and Van Gogh, Seurat, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. Dufy was an out-and-out individualist, however, and was not tempted to imitate any of these artists. He produced, between 1935 and 1937, Fée Electricité (Spirit of Electricity), the emblem for the French utilities company Electricité de France (EDF). Dufy visited the USA for the first time in 1937, as a member of the Carnegie Prize jury. In 1940, the outbreak of war (and his increasingly rheumatic condition) persuaded him to settle in Nice. When he eventually returned to Paris 10 years later, his rheumatism had become so debilitating that he immediately left for Boston to follow a course of pioneering anti-cortisone treatment. He continued working, however, spending time first in Harvard and then in New York City before moving to the drier climate of Tucson, Arizona. The cortisone treatment was by and large unsuccessful, although he did recover the use of his fingers. He returned to Paris in 1951 and decided to settle in Forcalquier, where the climate was more clement. Within a short time, however, he was wheelchair-bound. He died in Forcalquier in March 1953 and was buried in Cimiez. Between 1895 and 1898, Raoul Dufy painted watercolours of landscapes near his native Le Havre and around Honfleur and Falaise. By the turn of the century, however, he was already painting certain subjects that were to become hallmarks of his work - flag-decked Parisian cityscapes, Normandy beaches teeming with visitors, regattas and the like, including one of his better-known early works, Landing Stage at Ste-Adresse. By 1905-1906 Friesz, Braque, Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, Van Dongen and Rouault were described collectively as Fauves (the wild beasts). What they had in common was a desire to innovate, but they felt constrained nonetheless to meet formally to set out the guiding principles of what promised to be a new 'movement'. Dufy quickly established that those principles were acceptable; moreover, he was most impressed by one particular painting by Henri Matisse ( Luxury, Calm and Voluptuousness) which, to Dufy, embodied both novelty and a sense of artistic freedom. A significant early 20th century landscape watercolor of the paradisical gardens at San Anton Palace in Attard, Malta by Nicholas Krasnoff, 1920 (Russian, 1864-1939). This beautiful piece is a wonderful example of the renowned Russian architect's prized watercolors, created while he was exiled to Malta in the early 1920's. Depicting a lush garden full of blooming, colorful flowers and a stately fountain at the San Anton Palace in Malta, one can see the deft hand and attention to detail rendered by the proficient artist and architect's hand. Signed "N. Krasnoff" lower right. Titled and dated "Malta, St. Antonio 1920". Unframed. Measures 10.25"H x 14.25"W. Right corner has a crease from being bent. Nikolay Petrovich Krasnov, also known as Nicholas Krasnoff or Peter Nicholas Krasnoff, was a Russian Serbian architect and painter. He served as Chief Architect of Yalta, Crimea (1887-1899). From 1922 he lived and worked in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and was a key figure in the architectural development of Belgrade. Attending the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1876, aged 12. As a young artist he received patronage from Sergey Tretyakov, brother of the founder of Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery, and entrepreneur Petar Gubonyin. In 1887 Krasnov became Chief Architect in Yalta. At the age of 23, Krasnov had large responsibility for the rapid growth of the city. He expanded the promenade, which by 1913 became the city's main street, before creating a new city plan in 1889 (including a new sewer system, planning regulations, new streets, prevention of unregulated construction, a school and children's hospital, and the construction of the Pushkin Boulevard). Two concrete bridges were built over the river, and the embankment strengthened. Krasnov also ran a private practice in Yalta until 1911. Among his most famous work is the Livadia Palace, later the location of the 1945 Yalta Conference. Designed over 60 buildings in Crimea, blending a modernist style with local traditions. Also of note: Dulber Palace, Koreiz (1895-97), Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Yalta (1902), Yusupov Palace, Koreiz (1909), Kokkoz Jami Mosque, Sokolyne (1910). In 1913, he presented a collection of illustrations he had produced of his works to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he held the title of academician. An opponent of the Russian Revolution, he left Yalta with his family in 1919 for Malta, alongside the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna, sister of Queen Alexandra, and over 600 members of the Russian aristocracy. Nikolay was in a group housed in the empty Villa St Ignatius, which had been a Jesuit college and then a hospital during World War I. To earn money, Nikolay painted many scenes of Malta, signing his paintings as N. Krasnoff. He is known as Nicholas Krasnoff in Malta. In May 2016 MaltaPost issued a commemorative set of stamps in his honor. In 1922 Krasnov moved to Belgrade, then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, where he became head of the Department of Monumental Architectural Developments and Monuments. His building designs in Serbia number around 60, and were created under the name Nikola Krasnov, as a mark of respect to his adopted homeland. Wilcox was influenced by Keller's innovative watercolor techniques, and from 1910 to 1916 they experimented together with impressionism and post-impressionism. Wilcox soon developed his own signature style in the American Scene or Regionalist tradition of the early 20th century. He joined the Cleveland School of Art faculty in 1913. Among his students were Lawrence Edwin Blazey, Carl Gaertner, Paul Travis, and Charles E. Burchfield. Around this time Wilcox became associated with Cowan Pottery. In 1916 Wilcox married fellow artist Florence Bard, and they spent most of their honeymoon painting in Berlin Heights with Keller. They had one daughter, Mary. In 1918 he joined the Cleveland Society of Artists, a conservative counter to the Bohemian Kokoon Arts Club, and would later serve as its president. He also began teaching night school at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute at this time, and taught briefly at Baldwin-Wallace College. Wilcox wrote and illustrated Ohio Indian Trails in 1933, which was favorably reviewed by the New York Times in 1934. This book was edited and reprinted in 1970 by William A. McGill. McGill also edited and reprinted Wilcox' Canals of the Old Northwest in 1969. Wilcox also wrote, illustrated, and published Weather Wisdom in 1949, a limited edition (50 copies) of twenty-four serigraphs (silk screen prints) accompanied by commentary "based upon familiar weather observations commonly made by people living in the country." Wilcox displayed over 250 works at Cleveland's annual May Show. He received numerous awards, including the Penton Medal for The Omnibus, Paris (1920), Fish Tug on Lake Erie (1921), Blacksmith Shop (1922), and The Gravel Pit (1922).
