About the Item

Title Charcoal Still Life with Jug Bottle and Fruit French Modernist Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Charcoal on textured artist paper unframed Size 19.75 x 25.5 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall condition with light handling marks, gentle surface undulation and minor wear around the sheet edges consistent with age and storage. The lower right corner is lightly creased and there are subtle tonal variations within the paper. The charcoal remains clear and well preserved, and the work presents attractively. Description A quietly atmospheric charcoal still life by Jacqueline Boisselot, depicting a group of domestic objects arranged across a table. A rounded handled jug occupies the left side of the composition, balanced by a tall bottle at the centre and a smaller pale fruit or rounded vessel positioned towards the right. Boisselot builds the image almost entirely through tonal contrast. The objects emerge from a softly worked field of charcoal, with dense areas of black and deep grey set against lighter passages of untouched paper. This restrained monochrome treatment gives the composition a calm, contemplative quality while placing particular emphasis on silhouette, proportion and the relationship between forms. The handled jug is especially effective, its broad curved body and looped handle described through subtle shifts in tone rather than hard outlines. The central bottle provides a strong vertical anchor, rising above the lower arrangement and dividing the composition into distinct areas of light and shadow. To the right, the smaller rounded object introduces a quieter note and helps balance the substantial mass of the jug. The surrounding background is deliberately ambiguous. Vertical bands and shadowed shapes may suggest further bottles, a window or the interior of a cupboard, but Boisselot avoids over-defining the setting. This allows the still life to remain suspended between observation and abstraction, with the darker forms functioning as both objects and compositional shapes. The textured paper contributes significantly to the work’s character. Charcoal catches across the grain of the surface, creating a delicate woven effect and a range of smoky greys. In places the medium appears rubbed and blended; elsewhere, firmer marks retain a more graphic edge. This variation gives the drawing depth and prevents the restrained palette from feeling static. From an interior perspective, this is a highly adaptable work. Its monochrome palette would sit comfortably in contemporary, minimalist or traditional spaces, particularly kitchens, dining rooms, studies or layered gallery walls. The landscape format and balanced arrangement make it especially suitable above a sideboard, console table or desk. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, still lifes, interiors, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by loose, confident handling, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to tone and composition. For more information, please do contact us with any questions you may have.
