About the Item

Title Charcoal Still Life with Wine Glass Bottle and Pear French Modernist Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Charcoal on textured artist paper unframed Size 19.75 x 25.5 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall condition with light handling marks, gentle surface undulation and minor age related toning and wear around the sheet edges. There is faint charcoal transfer and surface marking visible verso, consistent with the medium and studio storage. The drawing retains strong tonal contrast and presents attractively. Description An atmospheric monochrome still life by Jacqueline Boisselot, depicting a wine glass, a tall bottle and a single pear arranged across a tabletop. Executed in charcoal on textured artist paper, the composition combines softly blended tonal passages with darker, more concentrated marks to create an intimate study of light, shadow and everyday objects. The tall bottle forms the central anchor of the arrangement, rising through the composition with a strong vertical silhouette. Boisselot defines its curved shoulders and narrow neck through subtle tonal gradations, allowing a pale reflected highlight to emerge against the surrounding charcoal. The bottle’s substantial form gives the drawing structure and divides the composition into two carefully balanced sections. To the left, the stemmed wine glass introduces a more delicate and transparent form. Its bowl is described through softened shadows and preserved highlights, while the narrow stem and rounded foot provide an elegant counterpoint to the heavier bottle. The glass appears partially absorbed into the dark band behind it, creating a convincing impression of reflection and depth. A single pear rests to the right of the bottle. Its pale rounded body stands out against the deeper charcoal background, while the narrow stem creates a small vertical echo of the bottle and glass. The inclusion of fruit introduces an organic form among the harder surfaces of the glassware and gives the arrangement a traditional still life character. Boisselot avoids sharply defining the surrounding interior. Broad areas of rubbed charcoal suggest a wall, tabletop and shadowed recess, but remain sufficiently open to allow the image to move between observation and abstraction. The darker horizontal passage behind the objects strengthens their silhouettes, while lighter areas below create the impression of a softly illuminated surface. The grain of the paper remains visible throughout, giving the charcoal a fine woven texture. In places the medium has been carefully blended to produce smoky greys; elsewhere, firmer vertical marks preserve the directness of the artist’s hand. This contrast between softness and structure gives the drawing its quiet visual tension. From an interior perspective, this is a refined and highly versatile work. Its monochrome palette would suit kitchens, dining rooms, studies and contemporary living spaces, while the horizontal format makes it particularly effective above a sideboard, console table or desk. The familiar still life subject and restrained tonal handling give the work an understated, collected quality. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by loose, confident handling, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to tone and composition. For more information, please do contact us with any questions you may have.
