About the Item

Swedish title: Hästkrake (The Old Nag) oil on panel signed on the reverse: Osc. Lycke Provenance: Acquired directly from Katarina Gunnarsson, who inherited the painting from her mother, Barbro, the daughter of the artist. This charming rural scene depicts a solitary horse grazing in the farmyard, bathed in warm sunlight. The textured brushstrokes and rich, earthy tones give the painting a vibrant, impressionistic quality. The weathered wooden buildings, likely Lycke’s childhood home in Sundsvall, add a nostalgic dimension to the composition. The artist captures the everyday simplicity of life in the Swedish countryside, an enduring theme in his work. Oscar Lycke (1877–1927) was a self-taught artist who, despite lacking formal training, dedicated his life to painting. Born and raised in Sundsvall, he pursued art from an early age, defying those who doubted his talent. After moving to Stockholm at the age of twenty, he struggled in his early years but eventually gained recognition. He exhibited in numerous Swedish cities, from Malmö to Norrköping, as well as internationally. His most significant success came with an exhibition in New York, where all of his works sold out. Lycke’s paintings, characterized by a blend of national romanticism and realism, often depict the Swedish landscape and rural life. His ability to capture both the grandeur of nature and the quiet beauty of everyday moments made his work deeply appreciated, particularly in his native Norrland.
