Pop Art Animal Paintings

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

Ducha - Shower Acrylic Painting on Canvas, Neo-Cubist Pop Art, 2013

By Jose Palacios

Located in New York, NY

In this original acrylic paint on canvas, Jose Palacios depicts a figure in a neo-cubist and pop art style in the shower. Using vibrant blues, pinks, purples, greens and yellows she is standing in the bath tub as the stream of water from the shower sprays over her. The style is reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein and Picasso. Palacios' work is characterized by it's geometry, precision of his figures and the use of a refreshing and bold palette. Jose Palacios was born in Spain in 1970. A self taught artist, he began his career in the world of comic books and illustration publications. He later transitioned to graphic design and street art. Jose was greatly influenced by the "Movida Madrileña" an explosive cultural period in the 1980's during Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy which produced arist's such as Ceesepe, Fernando Vicente, Ana Juan, Ouka Leele and Javier de Juan.

Damien Hirst Spin Painting (Damien Hirst shark spin painting)

By Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst Spin Painting 2009: A mesmerizing Damien Hirst Spin painting with explosions of vivid color amidst the timeless, mysterious form of a shark. This Damien Hirst Spin painting originates from Hirst’s ‘Spin Workshop’ - a public event hosted by the artist to celebrate the opening of his heralded 2009 exhibition: ‘Requiem’ at the PinchukArtCentre, Ukraine. Acrylic on paper. 2009. 19.25 x 26.5 inches. Excellent overall condition. Unique; one of. Features a stamped (printed) signature on the reverse and inscription: © Damien Hirst. A beautifully rendered Damien Hirst painting defined by strong colors, classic Hirst motifs & a unique overall presence. Artist Bio: Damien Hirst is a British Conceptual artist known for his controversial take on beauty and found-art objects. Along with Liam Gillick, Tracey Emin, and Sarah Lucas, Hirst was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. “I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds,” he reflected. “Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Hirst was raised in Leeds. As a student at Goldsmiths College in London, his work caught the eye of the collector and gallerist Charles Saatchi, who became an early patron. Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)—a large vitrine containing an Australian tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde—was financed by Saatchi and helped to launch the artist’s career. Hirst went on to win the coveted Turner Prize in 1995. In 2012, he showed what went on to be one of his most controversial work in decades, the installation In and Out of Love, which consisted of two white windowless rooms in which over 9,000 butterflies flitted around and died. In 2015 Hirst opened the Newport Street Gallery in London, which grew from his long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. His works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami. "Mario SAFE my GUCCI ass" Mixed media Painting 37" x 48" in by John Paul Fauves 2017 Mixed media, acrylic and oil on canvas 37" × 48" inch From GUCCI in Wonderland series GUCCI in Wonderland series contains two parts. First one, GUCCI in wonderland, is an inspiration that came to John Paul Fauves after doing a 10 piece collection of some Alessandro Michele art campaigns. There was so much magic realism in the GUCCI brand and concept that transcended from being a clothing label to something more surreal. It is here when the artist decides to give a hold to his new collection for 2018 named "holy exit" and dive into this new world of colors and wonders. The second part, Alice in Wonderland, represents the artist a world of fantasy and dreams. It seems as if the author Lewis Caroll could write like a dream. The same concept of surrealism is what FAUVES feels about Gucci design and branding. It as if Gucci can design and create form the world of dreams, and this is what the artist wants to represent in his art GUCCI in wonderland. ABOUT John Paul FAUVES: John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work. In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.” 2019: Alts Iz farloyrn, Los Angeles, CA Portraits of Someone, London 2018: [ Mi / Me ] solo exhibition at DOPENESS ART LAB, Taipei, Taiwan Arte de La Peer Papi Chulo group exhibition, Krause gallery, NYC Down the Rabbit Hole group exhibition, Imitate London, London, UK ARCO Madrid Art Palm Beach, Miami 2017: Art Basel Miami PIXELS Pre-Basel group exhibition by JM Art Management at Laurent & Martin gallery LA Style Fashion week FACES, group exhibition by JM Art Management at HOMME gallery A Loss of Innocence, solo exhibition Guy Hepner...

Vibrant piece. Snoopy homage. About the artist: South Africa’s most renowned pop artist is an anonymous figure known as Fringe. His large-scale artworks on canvas are devoted to the common good, and human bonds. Fringe’s obsession with our ambivalence to fame, fortune and conspicuous consumption is in itself never obvious. Rather, his message is buried within his compositions that feature a coded cast of world famous pop characters, arranged to bamboozle and entertain. In his multimedia works, the clash of icons and symbols causes a resounding visual explosion. Fringe’s slogans are visual challenges placed to intrigue and disrupt. Borrowed from high and low culture -- textbooks, television, adverts, signage and magazines – they are like instructions on packaging, or directions in a shopping mall...
