About the Item

Mid Century Haiti Carnival Abstract Expressionist Figurative Painting, Signed and Dated Oil painting of Carnival celebration in Haiti village depicts loosely rendered Haitian musicians and dancers celebrate beneath makeshift structures. Bay Area artist Arlene Smith (American, 20th Century), 1968, captures the rhythmic movement and communal energy and joy of Carnival. The artist invokes the motion and heat with dynamic, expressionistic brushwork—layering warm ochres, reds, and deep umbers with flashes of blue. Artist: Ardene Smith Medium: Oil Paint on Canvas Signed and dated "Ardene '68" bottom right corner and on verso. Condition: Good; professionally restored Unframed Image size: 30"H x 20"W. Ardene Smith was a mid-20th-century Northern California painter active primarily on the San Francisco Peninsula, with ties to San Carlos and the broader Palo Alto arts community. Smith was associated with the Thirty and One Artists, and also connected to the Palo Alto Art Club (now the Pacific Art League), one of the Peninsula’s central art institutions. Founded in 1921, the organization served as a key hub for instruction, exhibition, and community building among local artists, particularly those outside the San Francisco commercial gallery system.
