(English, fl. early 20th century) Fox Hunting Scene with Huntsman and Hounds Oil on board, circa 1906 A spirited and finely observed English fox hunting scene depicting a field in full pursuit across open countryside. At the centre, a huntsman in traditional scarlet coat rides a grey horse at speed, captured mid-stride as it clears a rustic hedge or low fence. Flanking figures follow in close succession, their mounts stretched in energetic gallop, while a small pack of hounds can be glimpsed in the distance, driving the chase forward across the rolling landscape. The composition is particularly successful in its sense of immediacy and forward motion. The diagonal sweep of the foreground hedge draws the eye across the picture plane, enhancing the dynamism of the riders and lending a pleasing depth to the scene. The artist employs confident, economical brushwork—especially in the handling of the horses—suggesting familiarity with sporting subjects and an understanding of equine movement.
