About the Item

Johannes Wilhjelm (Nakskov, 1868 – Copenhagen, 1938) Parisian Cancan Dancers at the Bal Tabarin, Montmartre, 1909 Oil on canvas Monogrammed lower right Inscribed with the location and dated lower left and on the reverse of the stretcher Canvas dimensions: 46.5 × 54 cm (18.31 × 21.26 in.) Framed dimensions: 55 × 63.5 cm (21.65 × 25 in.) This lively oil painting by Danish artist Johannes Wilhjelm depicts a performance at the celebrated Bal Tabarin, one of the most fashionable Parisian music halls of the Belle Époque. Opened in 1904 near Montmartre, the establishment rapidly became renowned for its extravagant balls, theatrical performances and energetic cancan dancers. Painted in 1909, Wilhjelm’s composition captures the excitement and movement of the crowded nightclub. The dancers occupy the foreground, their raised skirts and extended legs forming a rhythmic sequence across the canvas, while the audience and surrounding interior dissolve into a vibrant background of figures, lights and loosely suggested architectural details. The artist’s vigorous, spontaneous brushwork conveys the speed of the performance rather than describing every element precisely. Creams, pale blues, pinks and touches of red emerge from an atmospheric harmony of greys and browns. The central dancer, seen from behind, draws the viewer directly into the spectacle, while the figure at the right turns towards the audience in a dramatic and animated pose. Wilhjelm studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before training under Peder Severin Krøyer and Kristian Zahrtmann. Associated with the second generation of Skagen painters, he is best known for his luminous landscapes and scenes of Danish life. This Parisian nightclub scene therefore represents a particularly unusual and dynamic aspect of his work, revealing his sensitivity to modern urban entertainment and the visual culture of the Belle Époque. Overall good condition. The frame is not in perfect condition and shows signs of age and wear, but remains presentable. The frame is offered complimentary.

Exquisite, original oil on canvas painting of a ballet performance by the well known French artist, Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. Old wax reline. Solid mahogany wood frame with gold decoration. Overall framed measurements are 24.75 by 33.25 inches. Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson was born in 1878 in Bordeaux. His first exhibition was in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he would later become a member. He received an honourable mention at the age of 23 in 1901, and a third-place medal in 1911. He also exhibited at the Société des Beaux Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. Cosson is a post-impressionist artist who developed a very distinctive style which makes him immediately recognisable among his peers. His passion was to capture a bustling Paris which was the epicentre of the Modern art world at the beginning of the twentieth century. Fascinated by Edgar Degas, he almost invariably followed the themes beloved by the Impressionist Master, such as Parisian women or horse racing. But like for Degas, his most admired works remain his paintings of...
