About the Item

Pierre-André Farcy, known as Andry-Farcy (1882–1950) French Cancan Oil on canvas 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in.) 71.5 × 66 cm (28.1 × 26 in.) framed Signed lower left Best remembered today as the visionary curator who transformed the Musée de Grenoble into one of France’s earliest museums of modern art, Pierre-André Farcy—known as Andry-Farcy—was also a painter, illustrator, poster designer, caricaturist and art critic. After studying at the École nationale des Arts décoratifs in Paris and attending Fernand Cormon’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts, Farcy settled in Grenoble in 1907. His paintings and drawings were exhibited at various Salons in Paris and Lyon, as well as at the Galerie Fenoglio in Grenoble. He also worked extensively for the local press and became particularly renowned for his advertising posters and illustrations. This lively depiction of the French Cancan reveals the artist’s experience as both a painter and a graphic designer. Against a boldly simplified background, the dancers form a compact, rhythmic group, their raised skirts and animated gestures conveying the energy and exuberance of the celebrated Parisian dance. The strong outlines, vivid colours and deliberately stylised figures give the composition the immediate visual impact of a poster. Appointed curator of the Musée de Grenoble in 1919, Andry-Farcy pursued a remarkably progressive acquisition policy, introducing works by many of the leading modern artists of his time. Through his determination and close relationships with artists, he established the museum as a pioneering centre for modern art in France. The institution also preserves an important group of his own paintings, drawings and posters. Overall good condition. Presented in a frame, which is offered complimentary.
