About the Item

Maurice Asselin (1882-1947) A Bouquet of anemones Signed lower left (partially hidden by the frame) Oil on canvas In good condition 21 x 28 cm Framed : 27 x 34cm Maurice Asselin particularly enjoyed painting still lifes and, more often than not, bouquets of flowers, some of which are for sale on this site. The choice of depicting a bouquet in a vase on a table corner is entirely in keeping with this type of composition by Asselin, but what is much more original is the clearly Asian inspiration of this work. The delicate balance and choice of colours reflect this influence, reminiscent of Japanese art but also of the Vitenamese school. Maurice Asselin (1882–1947) He was a french painter, watercolourist and printmaker born in Orléans, trained under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Associated with the School of Paris, he was best known for still lifes, nudes, and Breton landscapes He painted in a restrained, sober palette influenced by Cézanne. A close friend of Walter Sickert in London (1914–16) and of writer Pierre Mac Orlan, he was commissioned as a war artist for the Musée de l’Armée in 1917 and made Officier de la Légion d’honneur in 1939. He died in Paris in 1947. Major museum collections • Musée National d’Art Moderne (Centre Pompidou), Paris • Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pont-Aven • Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston • LACMA • Brooklyn Museum / MoMA, New York • British Museum, London • National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen We must quote Maurice Asselin, who said, “If you truly love painting, you will not ask it merely to be decoration for the walls of your home, but first and foremost to be nourishment for your inner life. No combination of minds, no theory, can give birth to a work of art...”. Art springs from a sense of wonder and love for life.”
