About the Item

Maurice Asselin (1882-1947) Notre-Dame, Paris Signed lower left, Oil on canvas 50 x 61 cm In good condition In its original frame : 61 x 72 cm It is really interesting to remember that Maurice Asselin was painting and exhibiting at the same time and in the same galleries as his friend Albert Marquet (1875-1947) who is almost his exact contemporary. The similarity in inspiration and to some extent in style is striking, since Notre Dame was a favourite subject for Marquet. To a certain extent Asselin is more modern, but in any case he asserts his style and his ever-recognisable hand. Maurice Asselin (1882–1947) He was a french painter, watercolourist and printmaker born in Orléans, trained under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Associated with the School of Paris, he was best known for still lifes, nudes, and Breton landscapes He painted in a restrained, sober palette influenced by Cézanne. A close friend of Walter Sickert in London (1914–16) and of writer Pierre Mac Orlan, he was commissioned as a war artist for the Musée de l’Armée in 1917 and made Officier de la Légion d’honneur in 1939. He died in Paris in 1947. Major museum collections • Musée National d’Art Moderne (Centre Pompidou), Paris • Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pont-Aven • Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston • LACMA • Brooklyn Museum / MoMA, New York • British Museum, London • National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen We must quote Maurice Asselin, who said, “If you truly love painting, you will not ask it merely to be decoration for the walls of your home, but first and foremost to be nourishment for your inner life. No combination of minds, no theory, can give birth to a work of art...”. Art springs from a sense of wonder and love for life.”
