About the Item

An American artists study of a seated female nude, back view, in a wooded landscape, oil on panel, executed circa 1860. This unusual motif painted on panel depicts a single female nude figure seen almost entirely from behind, seated at the base of a large tree, in a wooded landscape opening onto a distant view at the left. The figure's weight rests on her hip, her legs drawn up and turned away from the viewer, while her right arm extends forward and down toward the ground. Her head is turned in near-profile toward the tree trunk, and her fair hair is dressed in a plait that falls forward over her shoulder and along her neck. The pose exposes the full length of the back, with particular attention paid to the soft, fleshy modeling of the shoulders, back, and buttocks. The landscape setting is rendered more loosely and in a cooler, greener tonal register than the figure, with a hazy blue-green distance opening at the left. The paint is applied thinly throughout, with the ground of the board visible in places, and there is a visible pentimento in the lower arm, where the artist appears to have altered its position and length during execution. These features, together with the sketch-like handling of the background, suggest the work is a study. The pose, proportions, and treatment of the flesh in the principal figure are closely modeled on the female nude type associated with Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), whose bathing nymphs and mythological female figures are frequently characterized by soft, rounded modeling of this kind. The landscape surrounding the figure, however, is stylistically distinct from Rubens' own manner, it is cooler in palette and more atmospheric in handling than the warm, dense forest settings typical of Rubens' Flemish landscapes, and reads instead as a 19th-century landscape convention. This disjunction between figure and setting indicates that the panel is not a copy of a complete, single Rubens composition, but rather a study of a Rubens figure or something close without conveying Rubens' own landscape or color scheme to which the present artist has supplied an independent landscape setting. The reverse of the panel bears the printed trade label of F. W. Devoe & Co, a manufacturer of artists materials, from the corner of Fulton and William Streets, New York, with the registered "Academy Board" trademark dated 1852. Devoe expanded to a national presence with a branch in Chicago in 1869. Labels bearing only the New York address, as here, are generally considered to predate that expansion, placing the manufacture of the board itself in the period circa 1852–1869, though Devoe continued producing academy boards of this general type for some years afterward, so the panel could have been painted somewhat later using older stock.

Collector´s Study, Interior Oil on Canvas, Signed, 1912, Neoclassical Style

Interior scene from a study or collectors room signed and dated with monogram "HNH 1912", Hans Nikolaj Hansen (1853-1923) presenting a quiet yet intellectually charged space. In the foreground stands a writing desk furnished with an inkwell and a book, objects that suggest reflection, scholarship, and artistic contemplation. Beyond the desk, set against a deep red wall, rises a large neoclassical sculpture whose pale surface contrasts with the warmth of the interior. The composition balances intimacy with monumentality: the scholar’s table before us, the silent authority of antiquity behind. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting reveals Hansen’s characteristic sensitivity to historical atmosphere. Hans Nikolaj Hansen was a Danish painter and Illustrator, born in 1853, the son of wine merchant C.J.A. Hansen and Sophie. After graduating in 1872 from Borgerdydskolen on Christianshavn, he followed his early artistic inclination and enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, completing his studies in 1877. He debuted the following year with the historical painting "Uden for Sigbrits Port", before travelling to Paris where he continued his education under the influential French painter Léon Bonnat. The Parisian training left a lasting imprint on his painterly discipline and compositional clarity. He also stayed in Rome for a time where he painted numerous historical and genre works. His art is distinguished by originality, narrative imagination, and a keen sense for historical character. Hansen achieved his greatest recognition as an illustrator and graphic artist. His illustrations for Gaffelen by Johan Herman Wessel...
