About the Item

Francesco Belotto (1721–1780) "Eucharistic Miracle of the Mule and the Heretic Before Saint Anthony of Padua" Framed: 82 x 170 cm Flat: 76 x 161 cm Medium: Oil on canvas This dramatic oil painting by Francesco Belotto vividly illustrates the famous Eucharistic Miracle of the Mule, a legendary episode from the life of Saint Anthony of Padua. According to tradition, Saint Anthony, to prove the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, challenged a heretic who doubted the doctrine of transubstantiation. The heretic’s mule, after three days of fasting, was presented with both a bundle of hay and the Eucharist. The animal, in a miraculous act, ignored the food and knelt in reverence before the sacred host, affirming the sanctity of the Blessed Sacrament. Belotto’s composition is rich in Baroque drama and movement, capturing the astonishment and awe of the onlookers. The dynamic contrasts of light and shadow, the finely detailed figures, and the carefully staged arrangement reflect the Venetian artistic traditions of the 18th century, influenced by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The theatricality of the scene, combined with expressive gestures and elaborate garments, reinforces the emotional intensity of the event. This exceptional work, housed in a period-style gilded frame, is a significant acquisition for collectors of religious and Baroque art, as well as institutions dedicated to sacred history.
