About the Item

Beautifully executed oil on panel painting of the interior of the Bourges Cathedral in Bourges, France. The artist is Pierre Gaston Rigaud. Rigaud is known for his many interior paintings of the grand cathedrals of France. Signed “Rigaud” lower left. Dated 1923 verso along with the city “Bourges” in France. Condition is very good. Under glass. Original gilt over wood Art Deco frame. Overall framed measurements are 8 by 5 inches. Provenance: A Long Island, New York collector. Bourges is a city in central France known for its half-timbered houses. The grand, Gothic-style Bourges Cathedral features 13th-century stained-glass windows. Close by, the ornate Jacques Coeur Palace was the home of a 15th-century nobleman. Exhibits at the Musée du Berry include an Egyptian mummy, agricultural tools and Etruscan bronzes. Displays on evolution are among the highlights at the Natural History Museum. BIOGRAPHY Pierre Gaston Rigaud was a pupil of Albert Maignan and Bonnat. He exhibited at group exhibitions, including the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, of which he became a member in 1906 and where he won a silver medal in 1920 and a gold medal in 1923. He also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1907, at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon d'Automne and Salon des Tuileries. Jean Leasin Hitch began her artistic career in Melbourne, Australia, under the tutelage of her father, Percy Leason, a professional painter, well-known cartoonist and illustrator. After coming to the United States in 1943, she was appointed curator of art at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, New York. While at the museum, she also began her restoration career and restored paintings from the museum's collection and other notable historic collections.
