About the Item

Water Patterns, oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches (Framed size: 43 x 33 inches), $4,800 “Connie Borup’s work cannot simply be described as landscape; it is the transforming light of dusk - the after glow of day that spell-like, borders on dream and reverie. Her paintings are intimate places of contemplation, silent worlds undisturbed by human kind or any narrative reference.” –Jane Connell. FROM THE ARTIST: In my recent art work I am taking a close, intimate look at nature. With a sense of quietude I invite the viewer to have a deeper, and more direct experience with our natural world. I am fascinated by the shapes of plants, leaves, pods branches and twigs and the play of light and shade on their surfaces. Water interests me because of its many visual and symbolic properties. It acts as a mirror to the sky and reflects its surroundings in unique and complex ways. This kind of complexity can increase the meditative state by holding one’s attention and focus longer. My paintings investigate the different levels of reality we can experience with a close observation of nature.

Inland Crossing 35

Inland Crossing 35

By Hyunmee Lee

Located in Salt Lake City, UT

The gestural paintings of Hyunmee Lee are sumptuously minimal. Rich forms advance from buttery canvases like an abstract garden. Gauzy veils of paint hover like soft air against the ebony weight of matter. Light peeks through translucent shapes like sunlight illuminating soft mist. Texture swirls and echoes across the canvas as if carved by waves or eroded by the wind. The viewer, invited into a realm of contemplation and meditation, is surprised to look away and see the physical world existing in only three dimensions. But perhaps that is precisely the experience the artist would like the viewer to have. In her current exhibition, Touch, on display at the Phillips Gallery...

"Approach to Lee's Ferry" by Kim Whitesides, oil on canvas, 18 X 22 inches (Framed size: 21.5 x 25.5 inches) Whitesides made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While working as an illustrator in New York City from the late 60s through the mid 80s, his paintings appeared in many publications, including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Playboy. He received numerous awards from The Art Directors Club of New York and The Society of Illustrators. It was at this time that Whitesides began a period of bold work with the airbrush that emphasized the simplified spaces and clean lines of art deco and art moderne, for which he gained a national reputation. A native Utahn, Whitesides believes art is a language and an opportunity for his vision to inspire others. He continues to grow as an artist, as his art is constantly opening doors on new vistas...

"Untitled, 1975" by Claudia Sisemore, acylic on canvas, 41.5 x 50 inches, $4,800. "I have a vague idea of what I am going to paint. I read that many artists are inspired by an idea before they begin their work and plan their approach and process based on that idea or muse. Others become inspired after they have begun working and watching colors, shapes and designs form. I basically belong the second group. Usually, after painting begins in a loose, free manner, I become excited by certain colors and patterns and continue from there." -Claudia Sisemore -- Caudia Sisemore says she was teaching English when artist David Chaplin (an equally popular and influential teacher) was at Weber and initially got her into landscape painting. “Then he took me to a show at the Art Barn and Lee [Deffebach] was showing there [with Don Olsen...
