About the Item

Paris River Bridge and City Buildings under a Sweeping Blue Sky Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) Watercolour on artist paper, unframed. Paper: 4 × 6 inches. Provenance: from the artist’s estate sale in Paris, France. Condition: fair overall condition with age-related toning, staining and studio marks, as visible in the photographs. An atmospheric original watercolour by Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) depicting a Parisian riverscape with an arched stone bridge crossing the water and city buildings stretching into the distance. The bridge forms the central focus of the composition, its sequence of arches reflected loosely in the water below. Buildings rise along the riverbank to the right, while trees and further architecture recede into the distance on the left. Above, broad washes of blue, grey and cream create an expansive, softly changing sky. Mazeilie’s economical handling gives the small work a particularly spontaneous character. Loose washes are combined with darker, more concentrated marks to define the bridge, riverbanks and architecture, capturing the atmosphere of Paris with remarkably few details. Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) lived and worked in Montmartre, with a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. His love of the coast led him to also maintain a studio on the Brittany coastline. Born in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, Paris in 1924, Mazeilie painted coastal scenes in Brittany, Parisian landscapes and architecture, Venetian cityscapes and portraiture. He later spent time in the United States, settling in San Diego, California, where he became a longstanding figure in the artists’ community at Spanish Village. The work has excellent provenance, having come directly from the artist’s estate sale in Paris.
