About the Item

Parisian Bridge over the River Seine beneath a Dramatic Sky Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) Watercolour on artist paper, unframed. Artwork: 7.5 × 9.5 inches. Provenance: from the artist’s estate sale in Paris, France. Condition: good overall condition with some age-related wear and marks, as visible in the photographs. An atmospheric original watercolour by Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) depicting a bridge spanning the River Seine in Paris beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky. The broad stone arches of the bridge dominate the foreground, carrying the eye across the river towards the softly rendered Parisian buildings beyond. Small figures and street lamps animate the bridge above, while the dark reflections and shadows beneath the arches provide a strong contrast with the pale mauve, blue and grey tones of the distant city. Mazeilie uses loose, expressive washes and economical lines to capture the architecture and atmosphere of Paris rather than concentrating on precise architectural detail. The dramatic sky and muted palette give the scene a particularly evocative quality, while the sweeping bridge provides a strong sense of depth and movement through the composition. Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) lived and worked in Montmartre, with a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. His love of the coast led him to also maintain a studio on the Brittany coastline. Born in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, Paris in 1924, Mazeilie painted coastal scenes in Brittany, Parisian landscapes and architecture, Venetian cityscapes and portraiture. He later spent time in the United States, settling in San Diego, California, where he became a longstanding figure in the artists’ community at Spanish Village. The painting has excellent provenance, having come directly from the artist’s estate sale in Paris.
