About the Item

Fallen Willow is an acrylic painting on canvas by artist René Gonzalez. It depicts a tangle of ivy and branches cascading over a dark pool, illuminated by starlight. Dimensions are 140 x 105 cm (55.1 × 41.3 in). This artwork is signed and sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Rene Gonzalez describes his figurative paintings as “a series of small stories.” Each piece carries a narrative rooted in an emotion or a tale the artist seeks to bring to life on the canvas. He draws on a vast array of familiar references to construct his quasi-theatrical compositions — from myths and legends of various cultures to advertising, photography, cinema, and art history. His use of vibrant, saturated colours is deliberate, chosen for their power to evoke emotion and create atmosphere. Considerable time is devoted to refining chromatic harmonies, a central element in his visual language. Shaped by both Latin American and Western cultural influences, Gonzalez weaves personal experience into his work through symbolic and allegorical imagery. His practice is profoundly marked by geographic displacement — sometimes forced, sometimes chosen — and this duality resonates in the layers of meaning within each painting. For the artist, dialogue with the viewer is essential: he often considers his works to be an ongoing conversation with a virtual audience. While thematic clues are embedded in his compositions, Gonzalez intentionally leaves their ultimate interpretation open to the observer. “My work depicts dreamlike landscapes inhabited by animal figures, weaving together elements of mythology, symbolism, and the natural world. Through intricate forestry and celestial motifs, I explore themes of mystery, transformation, and the unseen forces that shape our understanding of reality.” — Rene Gonzalez

"Birch Woods", Surrealist Naive Primitive Night Landscape Acrylic Painting

By Henriette Gorbitz

This artwork actually contains two landscapes. The inner landscape depicts a forest of birch trees at dawn or at dusk, with a purple sky and a fuzzy Sun. The ground is full of colored small flowers and plants. The outer landscape depicts a night green landscape through birch branches, with clouds and the Moon. Although both landscape can't actually merge, some branches of the inner landscape extends into those of the outer landscape, which makes this painting surrealist. Both landscapes are separated by a pink mosaic...

This Changes Everything (Landscape, Mixed media, forest, sun, trees, night)

Acrylic, spraypaint, oilbar, oil on linen Faint signature at bottom center of painting in silver. See photo. During the days of painting en plein air, Krieger describes how she began to dream about painting while sleeping, and thus turned those night visions into this series of night time paintings. In these, we see the landscape transformed into a dream-like setting. These surrealist imaginings of the natural world place Krieger’s paintings within a cohort of contemporary women painters reimagining the tradition of the landscape genre, such as Shara Hughes...
