Years before these accomplishments, however, Zack appeared as a child actor in the acclaimed motion picture Lorenzo’s Oil, portraying Lorenzo Odone opposite Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte. Beyond its personal significance, the painting is further distinguished by the survival of the original photographic studies created by Hornak during its development. These preparatory materials are preserved in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art, providing rare documentation of the artist’s creative process.
