About the Item

Blue and Red Study II by Zachary Schomburg feels dense, tactile, and quietly charged. A broad field of layered blue dominates the surface, built up with rough textures, smudges, and scraped areas that reveal glimpses of the canvas beneath. The blue reads as heavy and atmospheric, suggesting depth and accumulation, while the exposed lighter areas introduce a sense of erosion or memory embedded in the surface. Along the bottom edge, a vivid red band breaks through the composition, injecting warmth and urgency against the cooler tones. The contrast feels deliberate but restrained, creating tension without overwhelming the balance. Overall, the painting conveys a sense of contained energy, earthy, weathered, and emotionally resonant, as if shaped by time and pressure rather than a single gesture. Zachary Schomburg is a painter and poet based in Portland, Oregon. Working primarily with acrylics, he draws inspiration from the vibrant energy and dynamic compositions of artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Etel Adnan. For Schomburg, painting is an act of letting go—an ongoing practice of embracing surprise and listening to the paint itself. In addition to his visual art, Schomburg is a poet and the author of six books of poems, a novel, and the founder of an independent poetry press. His creative practice spans both mediums, with a deep commitment to storytelling through both words and imagery. Schomburg lives in Portland with his partner B and their child, Y, where he continues to explore the connections between language, art, and the natural world around him.

Large, Blue, Red, Abstract Painting by Late American Artist John Link

Large, Blue, Red, Abstract Painting by Late American Artist John Link

By John Link

Located in Greensboro, NC

Dynamic layered blue & red abstract acrylic painting on canvas by the Late Midwestern Artist John Link, mounted in a wood frame. This work, entitled "Temporary Ephedrine", is one of several large Link pieces available exemplifying his technique of richly layering tones of acrylic paint using an alkyd spirit resin. Link detailed this process: “The medium is indeed "acrylic" but not what most people mean by acrylic - which is waterborne acrylic. Instead this is acrylic resin dissolved in turps, with a dash of alkyd resin thrown in to stabilize it so the next layers of paint do not re-dissolve it. Thus it does not muddle up like repeated layers of watercolor can. This stuff does not yellow either, like oil, and a glass of it looks like a glass of water, it is that clear, thus preserving the intensity of the pigment. Also, because it is clear when wet, there is no "pastel effect" like you get with waterborne acrylic, where you must let a glaze dry before you see what you have. It is WYSIWYG to the core." Link (1942 - 2021) was born in Oklahoma City, began his career in Illinois, headed the art dept at Virginia Tech...
