About the Item

Christopher Wool The Show is Over, 2000 Offset Lithograph poster 36 × 24 inches Limited Edition of approx 100 (unnumbered) Unframed This collectible offset lithograph poster was published in a limited edition of approx. 100 by the Dallas Museum of Art - but the run was abruptly discontinued and stopped before it was finished. The remaining few prints - like this one - are extremely desirable collectors items. The work is based on a 1990 untitled work by Wool that is in the Dallas Museum of Art's permanent collection. The text on the poster is taken from Russian writer and philosopher Vasili Rozanov’s definition of Nihilism. It reads: "The show is over, the audience get up to leave their seats, time to collect their coats and go home, they turn around, no more coats, no more home." Wool drew upon this quote in multiple compositions. More about Christopher Wool: Christopher Wool is widely regarded as one of the preeminent and most influential American painters of his generation. He was born in 1955, grew up in Chicago, and moved to New York City in the early 1970s. Since establishing himself as an artist in the 1980s, Wool has forged an agile, highly focused practice that incorporates a variety of processes and mediums, paying special attention to the complexities of painting. Wool’s creative output also incorporates photography, sculpture, artist books, and printmaking. Wool’s work has been presented at museums around the world. Among the institutions that have held major solo exhibitions of his work are the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. Wool’s work is included in numerous noteworthy international institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Tate Modern, London. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome; Artist in Residence at DAAD, Berlin and Chinati Foundation, Marfa; and a recipient of the Wolfgang Hahn Prize. In 2021 major sculptures by the artist were permanently installed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. United Kingdom - Offset Lithograph on Paper, from the original show 1993 Christopher Wool’s paintings and prints explore the confluence of image, text, and pattern. They often feature enigmatic, confrontational found phrases or illegible scribbles, which are either stencilled or plastered in black across flat white fields. The artist occasionally covers the compositions with spray-paint marks and screen-printed elements (some taken from his previous works), erasing and relayering as he goes. His process—which focuses on the possibilities of reproduction, appropriation, and accretion—is as important as the results themselves. Wool studied at Sarah Lawrence College and the New York Studio School. New York’s vibrant 1970s downtown No Wave and punk scenes became major influences, and Wool reached his mature style in the mid-1980s. Wool has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, and beyond, and his work belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate. His work has achieved eight figures on the secondary market. Drawing from Minimalism and Conceptualism, Felix Gonzalez...

In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.” “With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.” Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers. The artist’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.
