About the Item

Study for Scissors Jack Series, 1965 Silkscreen on tracing paper Plate signed This work has been elegantly floated and framed in a museum quality wood frame painted bold blue under UV plexiglass.  Measurements: Framed: 16 inches (vertical)  by 19 inches (horizontal) by 2 inches 11 1/4 × 14 1/8  This work has been institutionally misinterpreted as a unique gouache or ink drawing, when it is, in fact, an open editioned silkscreen. Cornell University, the Vogel Collection and many other institutions are simply incorrect, as this silkscreen on tracing paper looks so incredibly authentic, that many reputable auction houses like Sknner mistake this print for a unique ink and gouache drawing.  “Scissor Jack Series” is a quintessential example of such use of geometry and color.  The piece explores structural tension by combining vibrant, hard-edged geometric shapes—bold purple and deep magenta triangles—juxtaposed against unpainted, inverted V-shaped negative spaces. In the original study, the artist's gridlines, mathematical notations, axes numbers, and scaled draft marks (\(1'' = 1'\)) are intentionally left visible, providing a direct window into Zox's creative formula. This silkscreen depicts the study of a work from Zox' Scissors Jack series - large-scale acrylic and epoxy paintings derived from studies like this one were featured in groundbreaking contemporary art exhibitions, including Shape and Structure (1965) and Systemic Painting at the Guggenheim Museum (1966).
