ABOUT THE ARTIST Yoshida Toshi (1911-1995) began training at the age of 14 under his father, Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the most acclaimed artists of the Japanese 20th-century printmaking revival movement shin-hanga (’new prints’ created in the traditional collaborative system of Japanese printmaking). He studied from 1932 to 1935 at the Taiheiyo-Gakai (Pacific Painting Association), co-founded by his father. Before the Pacific War, Toshi traveled widely with his father in Asia, Europe, Egypt, and the United States. Later he continued his worldwide travels, especially in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Africa. Following his father’s death in 1950, Toshi began his very personal exploration of abstraction, joining the sôsaku-hanga movement (’creative prints’ wherein the artist is creator, carver, and printer). During this richly creative period (1954 to 1973), Toshi created over three hundred nonobjective designs. In the early 1960s, Toshi returned to large-scale figurative work, concentrating on scenes of African wildlife in its natural habitat, and in 1984 he published the first of many illustrated children's books on African wildlife (Dobutsu Ehon Shirizu), which he continued to produce until the early 1990s. Raoul Dufy was an important multifaceted French artist who worked in a variety of media including painting, print making, mural design, theatre and costume design, upholstery, wall paper, ceramics, and fabric. In his paintings he often depicted the circus, equestrian scenes, Parisian cafe life, yachting scenes, colorful views of the French Riviera, and musical events in a distinctive style that combined the various artistic trends of the day, most notably Fauvism. Image Dimensions: 14 x 12.5 cm Lojze Spacal, also known as Luigi Spacal, was born on the Trieste Karst, at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from a family of Slovenian nationality.In 1930 he was arrested on charges of anti-fascism and confined for some time to Accettura, in Basilicata. Here he discovered his artistic vocation. In 1934 he graduated in Venice. He began to exhibit his first works in 1937. In 1942 he was again sent to confinement, this time in Abruzzo and, later, assigned to a special working battalion in Forte dei Marmi. The present woodcut print comes from the second edition of 'Klänge (Sounds),' a book of original graphics and poetry by Wassily Kandinsky. The title of the album and of this print, 'Improvisation,' demonstrated Kandinsky's interest in music and how abstract musical forms could be translated into images on a two-dimensional surface. This particular composition is difficult to read, but through the abstraction, one can make out various figures and a landscape beyond. Originally carved and printed in 1911, this second edition print was done ca. 1938. It is a woodcut in black ink on woven paper. Roethel 124 Artist Bio: The Museum of Modern Art described 'Klänge (Sounds)' as follows: Vasily Kandinsky's self-described "musical album," Klänge (Sounds), consists of thirty-eight prose-poems he wrote between 1909 and 1911 and fifty-six woodcuts he began in 1907. In the woodcuts Kandinsky veiled his subject matter, creating increasingly indecipherable images (though the horse and rider, his symbol for overcoming objective representation, runs through as a leitmotif). This process proved crucial for the development of abstraction in his art. Kandinsky said his choice of media sprang from an "inner necessity" for expression: the woodcuts were not merely illustrative, nor were the poems purely verbal descriptions. Kandinsky sought a synthesis of the arts, in which meaning was created through the interaction of, and space between, text and image, sound and meaning, mark and blank space. The experimental typography shows his interest in the physical aspects of the book. ABOUT THE ARTIST Charles Quest, painter, printmaker, and fine art instructor, worked in various mediums, including mosaic, stained glass, mural painting, and sculpture. Quest grew up in St. Louis, his talent evident as a teenager when he began copying the works of masters such as Michelangelo on his bedroom walls. He studied at the Washington University School of Fine Arts, where he later taught from 1944 to 1971. He traveled to Europe after his graduation in 1929 and studied at La Grande Chaumière and Academie Colarossi, Paris, continuing to draw inspiration from the works of the Old Masters. After returning to St. Louis, Quest received several commissions to paint murals in public buildings, schools, and churches, including one from Joseph Cardinal Ritter, to paint a replica of Velasquez's Crucifixion over the main altar of the Old Cathedral in St. Louis. Quest soon became interested in the woodcut medium, which he learned through his study of J. J. Lankes' A Woodcut Manual (1932) and Paul Landacre's articles in American Artist magazine ‘since no artists in St. Louis were working in wood’ at that time. Quest also revealed that for him, wood cutting and engraving were ‘more enjoyable than any other means of expression.’ In the late 1940s, his graphic works began attracting critical attention—several of his woodcuts won prizes and were acquired by major American and European museums. His wood engraving entitled ‘Lovers’ was included in the American Federation of Art's traveling print exhibition in 1947. Two years later, Quest's two prize-winning prints, ‘Still Life with Grindstone’ and ‘Break Forth into Singing’, were exhibited in major American museums in a traveling show organized by the Philadelphia Print Club. His work was included in the Chicago Art Institute's exhibition, ‘Woodcut Through Six Centuries’, and the print ‘Still Life with Vise’ was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1951 he was invited by artist-Curator Jacob Kainen to exhibit thirty wood engravings and color woodcuts in a one-person show at the Smithsonian's National Museum (now known as the American History Museum). Kainen's press release praised the ‘technical refinement’ of Quest's work: ‘He obtains a great variety of textural effects through the use of the graver, and these dense or transparent grays are set off against whites or blacks to achieve sparkling results. His work has the handsome qualities characteristic of the craftsman and designer.’ At the time of the Smithsonian exhibition, Quest's work was represented by three New York galleries in addition to one in his home town. He had won 38 prizes, and his prints were in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Chicago Art Institute, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In cooperation with the Art in Embassies program, his color woodcuts were displayed at the American Embassy in Paris in 1951. Recognition at home came in 1955 with his first solo exhibition in St. Louis. Press coverage of the show heralded the ‘growth of graphic arts toward rivaling painting and sculpture as a major independent medium’. An exhibition of his prints at the Bethesda Art Gallery in 1983 attracted Curator Emeritus Joseph A. Haller, S.J., who began purchasing his work for Georgetown University's collection. In 1990 Georgetown University Library's Special Collections Division was the recipient of a large body of Quest's work, including prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture, stained glass, and his archive of correspondence and professional memorabilia.
