Etching on paper, laid down on mount Signed in the plate (lower right): Félicien Rops Printer’s inscription in the plate (lower margin): Nys. imp. de la Société A satirical etching by the celebrated Belgian draughtsman and printmaker Félicien Rops, titled “Mon Bourgmestre”(“My Mayor”), an ironic portrayal of municipal authority rendered with the artist’s unmistakable wit and sharp observational style. The composition shows a solitary male figure viewed from behind, dressed in a long coat and holding an umbrella, standing in a sparse landscape. Through this seemingly simple scene, Rops delivers a subtle but incisive caricature: the anonymous stance, heavy silhouette and aloof posture suggest both self-importance and detachment, transforming an everyday bourgeois figure into a gently mocking emblem of civic power. Executed with confident line work and expressive tonal contrasts, the print perfectly reflects Rops’ gift for blending refined technique with social commentary, a hallmark of his graphic production and one of the reasons he remains among the most important satirical artists of the late 19th century. The work is presented on a period-style green mount with ruled borders, in keeping with traditional collector’s presentation. Overall good condition. Light age toning and minor foxing/spotting visible, consistent with age. Margins with mounting traces. The etched image remains well preserved with clear lines and good contrast.
