About the Item

A superb impression of Martin Lewis's consummate image of Japan. Etching with drypoint on fine cream laid paper, 13 7/8 x 10 3/8 inches (352 x 265 mm); sheet 17 3/4 x 14 1/4 inches (451 x 362 mm), full margins. Signed and dedicated in pencil. One of only 40 recorded impressions (although McCarron states an intended edition of 100). Minor mat tone. A magnificent, dark and inky impression with rich burr and luminous tonality. Presented in a modern gilt wood frame. [McCarron 60]. The image depicts a street booth in Tokyo which has been decorated with shimenawa, which are knotted straw ropes blessed and purified by Shinto priests to commemorate the new year. Martin Lewis was born in Australia, but spent his active years in the United States, primarily in San Francisco and New York City. He traveled to Japan in 1920, where for two years he studied Japanese art. The influence of Japanese printmaking is very evident in Lewis's prints after that period. In 1924 Lewis returned to New York and produced most of his well-known works there between 1925 and 1935. He is most famous for his luminous black and white prints, mostly of non-tourist, slice-of-life nocturnal street scenes of New York City. Lewis taught printmaking at the Art Students League of New York from 1944 until his retirement in 1952.
