Further Background & History: Between the years 1978 and 1986 Raymond Pettibon (aka, Raymond Pettibone; St. Pettibone) produced a now historic amassment of graphic works for the seminal Southern California punk band Black Flag. Published mostly by SST Records - founded by Pettibon's brother and Black Flag guitarist, Greg Ginn, these works shed valuable light on the origin and development of Pettibon’s thematic interests & style; not to mention his evolution into one of the most important artist’s of his generation. In November, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg hosted Homo Americanus, a major survey of Pettibon’s work, encompassing over six hundred works from every part of the artist’s career, a majority of which have never been shown before. This major exhibition was also accompanied by a publication of the same name, documenting these same early works. In February 2017, the New Museum presented 'A Pen of All Work,' a major solo exhibition of Pettibon’s work featuring 700 plus drawings from the 1960s to the present - the artist’s first museum survey in New York and most comprehensive presentation of his work to date. Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." About Raymond Pettibon (Americanb. 1957) Having emerged from the Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, Raymond Pettibon fuses together youthful edginess and political engagement.
