Artist: Lady Jane Webb Loudon (Brittish, 1800 - 1858) 9.5 x 8 in. page. 12 x 14 in. frame. A color lithographic plate from The Ladies' Flower-Garden of British Wildflowers. By Mrs. Loudon. Publisher: William Smith, London. An antique botanical illustration showcasing a cluster of flowers including poppies and anemones and their accompanying foliage against a simple, natural paper background. The color palette includes soft yellows, an earthy orange-brown, a delicate white, and a muted purple-blue, all complemented by various shades of green in the stems and leaves. The illustration features five prominent blooms, each depicted with careful attention to detail, highlighting their delicate petals and central stamens. Below the flowers, a cluster of spiky leaves with serrated edges provides a textural contrast. The style is exemplary of scientific botanical drawings, emphasizing accurate representation and naturalistic coloration, created for educational or archival purposes. Artist Bio: "The love of flowers is calculated to improve our best feelings, and subdue our bad ones; and we can hardly contemplate the beauty and richness of a flower-garden without feeling our hearts dilate with gratitude to that Almighty Being who has made all these lovely blossoms, and given them to us for our use." Said Jane Webb Loudon, a statement that embodies the deep admiration she felt for her botanical subjects. Books of floral illustration were a popular form of publication in the 19th century. Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden, published by W. Smith, London, was one of the earliest examples of this genre. The series included five titles illustrating hundreds of specimens of flowers with their scientific name. Each illustration is a work of "chromolithography", a 19th century form of color printmaking, complete with the scientific names. The rigor that Loudon applies to depicting each plant's detailed anatomy, in its seasonal phases, speaks to her dedication as a scientist and naturalist. Loudon created the series for women, and the publications inspired many ladies of Victorian England to participate in science, gardening, and exploration of the natural world.

This is a hand-colored copper plate engraving depicting Ranunculus (Persian Buttercup) flowers from Basilius Besler's landmark work, Hortus Eystettensis (Garden at Eichstatt), first published in 1613 in Eichstatt, Germany near Nuremberg and later in 1640 and 1713. This beautiful colorful engraving is printed on thick laid chain-linked paper. There is latin text on the verso.
