About the Item

Jean-Marc Tétro’s abstract sculptures can be found in many public venues including his own township in Quebec where he created a steel sculpture of horses as an homage to the renowned Canadian painter, Frederick Coburn. His masterful sculptural work is often abstract; a blend of science, philosophy and spirituality that explores the poetry of the human psyche. Vortex is an imposing steel structure-part of a series the artist produced about the emergence of life. It was inspired by the birth of his own daughter. In this dynamic composition, ‘ribbons’ of steel swirl together spiralling upwards towards the sky. Tiny detailed markings that appear as particles on each ‘ribbon’ add expressive detail. In science, a vortex is a fluid mass that spins around a center pulling objects into its hollow core. The word itself can describe both natural and spiritual phenomena, act as a metaphor for an emotional state and as a location that radiates energy. “I create artworks from my own observations and experience. I am an actor-witness. I’m not just looking, I’m finding.” Jean-Marc Tétro Jean-Marc Tétro is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist based in Melbourne, Quebec. He has pursued training in various techniques including welding, mechanical fabrication, bronze casting and has taken numerous classes in drawing and painting. He has traveled and studied in various countries including England, France, Italy, Switzerland and the United States. Tétro's work can be found in both private and public collections.

Quebec sculptor Bernard Hamel often looks to nature as a source of inspiration for his contemporary sculptures. Geyser emulates the fluid form of a spout of water erupting from the ground and shooting skyward. Forged from fine individual rods of stainless steel, this elegant and dynamic shape suggests turbulent motion. Geysers are a rare natural phenomenon. Hamel prefers to work in a variety of materials including wood and metals, often incorporating the sculpture into a natural environment. “My sculptural approach is essentially based on a direct relationship with the material….The material directs my gestures, determines my choices and the tools allow me, with their singularity, to model these shapes. Memories meet material to transform into a sculptural form with organic lines.” Bernard Hamel Bernard Hamel was born in Quebec and lives and works in St. Roch des Aulnaies. He completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts at UQAM with a focus on sculpture. To perfect his knowledge of wood he completed a course in cabinetmaking at the Institut québécois d’ébénisterie, in Quebec. In 2005, he took a woodturning course with Jean-François Escoulen and André Martel, two internationally renowned turners. Since 1999, Hamel has taught sculpture at the Maison des Métiers d’Art de Québec. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and participated in international symposia including the Camille Claudel Sculpture...

"Tornado" by Joel Perlman Abstract Metal Sculpture in steel Joel Perlman has been creating complex sculptures out of steel, bronze, and aluminum since the early 1970's. While minimalism was the predominant style of his genration, Perlman chose to push his forms into ever-more complicated, gravity defying, configurations. Perlman investigates with originality. He expands, rather than appropriates, enriching our experience with industrial materials. Contemporary, Abstract Outdoor Metal...
