About the Item

This contemporary outdoor sculpture is made from metal and marble. This elegant outdoor sculpture is by Jean-François Maheux and Nadia Mercier, an artistic couple who formed a collective in Quebec. Working together, they have attracted an international audience as their sculptures can be found throughout Canada and in Europe. They have developed a distinctive visual language that is focused on creating a harmonious balance between form and the timeless raw materials they favour. Jean-François brings highly technical skills in aerospace machining and stonecutting to the team while Nadia works on conceptual designs and digital modeling. With Harmony, four gracefully arched rods of highly polished stainless steel rise from a rectangular Corten steel base to create a dynamic support for two white marble spheres. The spheres are adorned with three small purple and yellow squares-a modern detail. Maheux-Mercier's artwork explores themes about memory, the passage of time and life’s relationships. “Our artistic approach is a bit like playing a game of tennis. We bounce ideas back and forth until we find the right one. After that, we decide, we make sketches, choose our dimensions, and then create models. Then Nadia works on the models on the computer to refine everything.” Jean-François Maheux and Nadia Mercier Quebec-based artists, Jean-François Maheux and Nadia Mercier have degrees in visual and media arts. In the early 2000s, they formed the company, Maheux-Mercier to collaborate on sculptural projects. They have specialized training in the field of stone, metal and glass, their preferred raw materials for sculptures. As Maheux-Mercier, they have participated in several symposiums and competitions. They have participated in various solo and group exhibitions in Quebec. Their public artworks can be found in several cities in Quebec and private collections throughout Canada and Europe.
