About the Item

This layered cement human head sculpture combines a hand-tinted mineral surface with chestnut wood inserts embedded between sections of the face. Created by Spanish sculptor José Perozo in 2023, the unique work is titled Proxecto VIII and belongs to his Proxectos series. Perozo constructs the head as an architectural volume divided into distinct horizontal layers. The crown, eyes and lower face appear as separate sections joined along visible seams, transforming human anatomy into an assembled structure. Small pieces of natural chestnut wood interrupt these divisions at carefully selected points. One vertical insert occupies the temple, while a second fragment enters the curved upper section of the skull. Their warm grain contrasts with the cool grey cement and suggests wedges, joints or structural components holding the layered head together. Wood does not decorate the portrait; it participates in its construction. This relationship between body and architecture is central to Perozo’s sculptural practice. He understands the body as our first and definitive dwelling: a physical home that we inhabit continuously. In Proxecto VIII, the face becomes both human presence and constructed enclosure. The horizontal cuts can be read as floors, courses of masonry or anatomical strata, while the chestnut elements evoke the internal carpentry of a building. The sculpture retains a recognisable figurative character. Its direct gaze, carefully modelled eyes, compressed lips and asymmetrical ears give the head a quiet but psychologically alert presence. At the same time, the visible seams prevent the portrait from appearing anatomically complete or self-contained. The figure seems assembled from fragments, balancing unity with the possibility of dislocation. Cement carries a deliberate conceptual significance. As a fundamental construction material, it gives the human head a dense, durable and architectural presence. Its restrained grey colouring preserves the mineral character of the surface, while the chestnut wood introduces warmth, organic variation and evidence of natural growth. The dialogue between both materials connects the making of a building with the construction of identity and bodily experience. The sculpture is cast from a silicone mould using high-strength cement and fine aggregate to preserve the detail of the original modelling. Acrylic fibre helps prevent plastic-shrinkage cracking, while a water-reducing additive improves the fluidity of the mixture without weakening its structural properties. The surface is individually tinted with water-based colour and protected with a special semi-matte varnish. The chestnut wood is treated with lasur for protection and durability. Air bubbles, casting seams, tonal changes, small chips, abrasions and occasional marks remain visible across the cement. These characteristics belong to the material and the artist’s process and should not be considered defects. They make each sculpture in the series unique and reinforce its resemblance to an aged architectural fragment. José Perozo studied Sculpture at Mestre Mateo in Santiago de Compostela and Stage Machinery and Set Construction at Escénica in Granada. Since developing Fragmentaria after a residency at the Fundación Eugenio Granell in 2019, he has investigated the body as an architectural structure through projects including Habitar and Antropotectura.
