A self-taught sculptor, Copper is drawn to what she considers the “misunderstood” animal, and much of her work centers on bats and burros. Pushing the barrier between animal and human, she approaches her subjects from all angles, playing on them as animals, and morphing them with human figures. Copper was first inspired to sculpt bats when she was visiting a temple in Chachongsao, Thailand, where she encountered hundreds of thousands of bats hanging above her, wings gently quivering. Copper remembers that she had never thought about bats before, but at that moment she was captivated and started to research them. Witte Roepie Roepie Rupee Calling White Bird Bronze Sculpture In Stock Pieter Vanden Daele was born in Belgium in 1971. He grew up between lakes and the river Scheldt. The river De Scheldt and the variety of lakes are an ideal environment for fishermen. When his friends went fishing, Pieter took painting lessons at the Oudenaarde academy. At a young age Pieter became fascinated by the underwater world and fauna. In 2000 he worked at an art foundation in Oudenaarde, where he learned how to make molds and how to cast and patronize bronze. His passions came together in 2003 and he started casting bronze sculptures of mainly carp. The fish that he makes have a special texture, a skin with scales translated into bronze. VandenDaele has developed its own technology for this. Pieter builds the original model from organic material, such as leaves, wood, leather, wax and many other materials. He uses various organic materials in his molds to create special prints and structures in the skin of the bronze. Quebec sculptor Bernard Hamel often looks to nature as a source of inspiration for his contemporary sculptures. Geyser emulates the fluid form of a spout of water erupting from the ground and shooting skyward. Forged from fine individual rods of stainless steel, this elegant and dynamic shape suggests turbulent motion. Geysers are a rare natural phenomenon. Hamel prefers to work in a variety of materials including wood and metals, often incorporating the sculpture into a natural environment. “My sculptural approach is essentially based on a direct relationship with the material….The material directs my gestures, determines my choices and the tools allow me, with their singularity, to model these shapes. Memories meet material to transform into a sculptural form with organic lines.” Bernard Hamel Bernard Hamel was born in Quebec and lives and works in St. Roch des Aulnaies. He completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts at UQAM with a focus on sculpture. To perfect his knowledge of wood he completed a course in cabinetmaking at the Institut québécois d’ébénisterie, in Quebec. In 2005, he took a woodturning course with Jean-François Escoulen and André Martel, two internationally renowned turners. Since 1999, Hamel has taught sculpture at the Maison des Métiers d’Art de Québec.
