Tatoo-Shave-Haircut

Tatoo-Shave-Haircut

By Reginald Marsh

Located in New York, NY

Reginald Marsh (1898-1934), Tattoo-Shave-Haircut, etching, 1932. Signed, titled (“Tattoo-Haircut-Shave”), dedicated (“for Arnold Newman”), and annotated (“Fourth State. First of Two Prints”). Reference: Sasowsky 140. On cream wove paper. In very good condition, with small margins (as trimmed, slightly irregularly, by the artist) (slight foxing in margins), remains of prior hinging verso; 9 7/8 x 9 3/4, the sheet 10 15/16 x 10 5/8 inches; archival matting. A very fine rich black impression; we have not seen impressions of comparable quality on the market. Provenance: Estate of Arnold Newman. Arnold Newman (1918-2006) was one of the great 20th Century masters of photography, and a friend of many leading artists; it is appears that Marsh took special care in printing this impression for Newman. Sasowsky calls for 10 states of Tattoo-Shave, based largely on Marsh’s notes. But the states are not clearly delineated (e.g., his States 3 and 4, one proof each, are characterized by Marsh as “Engraving added”; no information is given for State 5). The design for the print was complete in the first state, and subsequent state changes were not, apparently, major. This impression does not appear to differ in etching lines from the final state impression shown in Sasowsky. Its inscription (as a Fourth State, by Marsh), as well as its rich inking and quality, attest to its being a proof before the edition (of about 34 impressions), but the state of this print (and, presumably of many of the other several proof impressions) cannot at this time be stated with confidence. Marsh printed this impression personally (we recall his famous answer to a question about the size of his editions: “Since I do practically all my own printing, I do not limit the edition. The buyer limits the edition – he rarely buys, I rarely print”). Tattoo-Shave-Haircut depicts a scene in the Bowery, a section of New York’s Lower East Side, during the Great Depression. The building and train structures in the top half of the print recall Piranesi’s Carceri...

A Burro Train, New Mexico

By Peter Moran

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork titled "A Burro Train, New Mexico" 1880 is an original etching on Laid paper by noted British/American artist Peter Moran, 1841-1914. It is signed in the plate as issue. The plate mark (Image) size is 9.15 x 6.5 inches, framed size is 14.75 x 18.75 inches. It is framed in a wooden silver frame, with light grey matting. It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age. I like to mention that example of this particular etching is held in the following museums, including, The Toledo Museum Of Art, Toledo, The British Museum, London and The Smithsonian Museum Of Art, Washington D.C. It was also illustrated in American Art Review, volume #2 1881, page 163. About the artist: The younger brother of Thomas Moran, Peter Moran was a painter-etcher best known for his Romantic sensibility and landscape compositions incorporating animals. The Moran family immigrated to the United States from England in 1844, when Peter was three. He began his artistic career as an apprentice to a lithographic firm and eventually studied painting with his brothers Edward and Thomas. He was influenced by the animal paintings of Rosa Bonheur and Constant Troyon and visited England in 1863 to see those of Edwin Landseer. Moran took up etching in 1874, using that medium to record genre scenes that he observed while traveling in New Mexico and Arizona in 1881 on an ethnographic expedition to study Pueblo Indian culture. He later returned to the Southwest in 1890 as an artist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1882, Moran joined Henry R. Poore, an artist friend, on a visit to Taos Pueblo where the two were given a room and spent a week watching the activities associated with the harvest. Poore recounted the details of their travels in an article titled "A Harvest with the Taos Indians...

By Stone Roberts

Located in Fairlawn, OH

Signed and numbered by the artist Edition: 25 Printed on Hahnemuhle paper Published by Neptune Fine Arts Condition: excellent Plate/Image size: Sheet size: "Stone Roberts’ luminous still lifes, private interiors, and large-scale panoramas of figures in motion invite us to look—and then look some more—and relish in the sensuality of the three-dimensional world. While Roberts’ varied influences include Greek Mythology and Roman Classicism, Dutch and Spanish Old Masters, Fantin-Latour, Ingres, and Balthus, his subjects are decidedly of today. From Grand Central Terminal to his wife gardening in Stonington, Connecticut, Roberts paints people and places from his personal surroundings into formal compositions that often appear to have mythical, literary, or psychological elements. Roberts received his B.A. from Yale University, New Haven, CT, where he studied painting with William Bailey, and his M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, and Rome. Roberts' work can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louis-Dreyfus Family Collection, New York. A solo exhibition of Stone Roberts’ work was held at the Museum of the City of New York in 2012 entitled Stone Roberts: New York City Paintings." By Jacob Dhein

Jacob Dhein's (US based) "Nude with Light Blue" is an oil painting that depicts a nude female figure with her black robe parted with a white patterned background Bio/artist statement: Jacob Dhein was interested in art as a child. Crayons and colored pencils were his tools of expression. He spent hours intricately crafting drawings of comic book heroes and animals. By the time he graduated from high school, one of his drawings was exhibited on the wall of a local bank. It wasn't until he was a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh that he decided to take a drawing class. He found this so compelling that he continued with sculpture and painting. During this time he met several accomplished and influential artists who encouraged him to pursue a career in art. Tc Farley...

Original 1942 Linen-Backed One-Sheet Movie Poster for "Ghost Town Law"

Located in Spokane, WA

Original 1942 Linen-Backed One-Sheet Movie Poster for "Ghost Town Law" The Rough Riders Series Starring Buck Jones, Tim McCoy, and Raymond Hatton. This striking original one-sheet movie poster from 1942 promotes "Ghost Town Law," the fifth entry in Monogram Pictures' popular "Rough Riders" Western film series. Measuring approximately 27 x 41 inches (standard one-sheet size), the poster features vibrant lithography on a bold yellow background, dramatic red title lettering for "The Rough Riders," and an illustrated scene of the three stars—Buck Jones, Tim McCoy, and Raymond Hatton—standing with their horses in a rugged desert landscape, guns at the ready. The artwork captures the essence of classic B-Western adventure, with the film's subtitle prominently displayed in quotes: "Ghost Town Law." Produced by Monogram Pictures and directed by Howard Bretherton, this film follows the Rough Riders trio as U.S. Marshals investigating murders in a haunted mining town overrun by outlaws, blending action, mystery, and frontier justice. Professionally linen-backed for preservation, this poster is in very good vintage condition, with minor fold restorations, light edge wear, and rich color retention, underscoring its archival quality. No major tears, pinholes, or fading are present, making it a desirable collector's piece for fans of early Hollywood Westerns or Buck Jones memorabilia. Buck Jones, a silent-era star who transitioned to talkies, tragically died in the Cocoanut Grove fire later in 1942, adding historical poignancy to posters from his final films. This example originates from the U.S. release and bears the classic Monogram logo, evoking the era of Saturday matinee serials and the golden age of cowboy cinema. History of the Origins of the Rough Riders The "Rough Riders" name draws on the legendary 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, formed in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Recruited by Theodore Roosevelt (then Assistant Secretary of the Navy) and initially commanded by Colonel Leonard Wood...
