Jacques Villon Abstract Paintings

French, 1875-1963
Jacques Villon was born Gaston Duchamp in 1875. He was the oldest brother of the artists Marcel Duchamp, Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti and the sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon. Initially a law student, in 1894 he went to Paris to study art. It was there that he met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and other influential artists in Paris, and changed his name to Jacques Villon, after the poet. Villon made prints of some of the most well-known belle-époque portraits and genre scenes of the early twentieth century. Around 1911, he came under the influence of Picasso and other cubists, and became a leading exponent of the style, exhibiting in the 1913 Armory Show in New York. In 1922, the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune commissioned Villon to produce a series of color aquatints after 38 major nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings. This series included works by Pierre Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Amadeo Modigliani, Edouard Manet, Pierre Bonnard, and others. Artists who were alive at the time of the printing collaborated with Villon, and signed the prints. The project took ten years to complete. Several of these prints are valued highly today, and some went on to be reproduced by the Louvre Museum as photo-etchings. Villon's 'cubist' etchings, with their characteristic cross-hatching, are amongst the most renowned prints of the twentieth century. Jacques Villon's long career brought him fame. The diverse nature of his paintings, from end-of-the-century portraits to cubist and abstract styles to graphic works, made him a major figure in twentieth-century art. He was made a Grand Officer of the Légion d'Honneur, and upon his death in 1963, and he was given a state funeral.

Stamped with the Sam Francis Estate logo and stamped signature on verso. Sam Francis’s paintings are a journey into a dream, a voyage into the landscapes of the soul where colours are lights on fire. Alongside names such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, Sam Francis is an artist who has succeeded in demonstrating a total mastery of abstract expressionism’s impassioned and spontaneous genre. The explosions of colour – red, blue, green and yellow – the streaks, strokes and bold lines of his pictures are the physical synthesis of the deepest crevices of the soul. His colours create rhythmical motifs that, characteristically enough, can be called the “musicality” of his paintings. The work of Sam Francis provides a visible meeting place for the conscious and the unconscious. His pictures are the cross-fertilisation of what has already been experienced with what exists still only as desire, a struggle between melancholy and merrymaking. Influenced by C.G. Jung, the father of psychoanalysis, Sam Francis spent a large portion of his life exploring the premise that dreams, instincts and intuition provide, the keys which unlock the mysteries and meaning of our inner lives. He was also fascinated by the four ancient elements – earth, water, air and fire – which developed into a leitmotif in his work. Sam Francis was born in San Mateo in California, USA in 1923. After starting to paint at the age of around twenty, he soon found himself increasingly consumed by the power of art. He spent much of the 1950s in Paris, from where he not only made frequent excursions to a number of European cities, but also embarked on many journeys to South America and Asia. He continued to move from place to place, primarily in the USA and Japan, right up until his death in 1994. Sam Francis’s first...

Howard Hodgkin based this print on a trip he took to visit his good friend and fellow Petersburg Press collaborator David Hockney in Los Angeles. The mid-eighties saw new levels of abstraction in Hodgkin’s work, building exuberantly off the ambiguous spaces of his earlier work. The artist used six colors of paint, producing a unique depth and texture to each print in this edition. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in DH in Hollywood at Petersburg Press, where he was a long-time collaborator. Soft-ground etching allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, giving his prints the characteristic black brushstrokes seen in this print. Paper 8.4 x 11 in. / 21.3 × 27.9 cm Soft-ground etching (from one plate) with hand coloring in watercolor (orange-red, brown, and green) and oil pastel (red and...

French painter, sculptor, engraver, James Coignard was born in Tours in 1925. He lived and worked in Antibes, in the Maritime Alps, and he died in March 2008. Coignard began his studies in 1948 at the School of Fine Arts in Nice; however, his journey as an artist began in the Côte d'Azur, where he settled. In fact, Coignard traveled a lot, living for a period from 1985 to 1988 in New Orleans. His artistic career was marked by collective and personal exhibitions both in France and abroad (Sweden, Switzerland, the United States...), where he enjoyed fame and recognition. Until the 1960s, his artistic development was characterized by an expressionistic style; then Coignard found himself moving towards an abstract one with random spots, regular shapes, typographical characters, and mixed media backgrounds. He was a painter but also a sculptor, who experimented with bronze and with glass. His work as an engraver was also quite well-known. James Coignard created his first glass sculpture in the 1970s at the Fucina degli Angeli. Only later, after meeting Adriano Berengo...
