James Coignard Prints and Multiples

French, b. 1925
James Coignard, painter, ceramist, sculptor and etcher, was born in Tours in 1925. At the age of 23 and after a brief career in the French administration, he discovers the landscapes of the French Riviera and decides to study at Arts décoratifs in Nice. Four years later, he quits his job at the administration to commit himself entirely to his artistic career. The encounter with Paul Hervieu in 1950 is decisive. His collaboration with gallery Hervieu made him known in artistic circles, nationally and internationally and then particularly in Scandinavia. At the beginning of his career, art critics label James Coignard as a member of Ecole de Paris. Soon, his painting and ceramic distances themselves from those of his colleagues and he goes it alone. At the beginning of the sixties, he starts to work with glass but the technical turning point occurs in 1968 when his friend Henri Goetz discovers a new etching technique, using carborundum. Etching then becomes central in his work. At the same time, his career takes off internationally. He travels a lot, especially to Sweden and USA where he lives during a few years. 1978, James Coignard participates in the creation of the etching studio Pasnic, with which he starts a long collaboration. During the eighties, he shares his time between Paris and the French Riviera and takes an interest in artist’s books and publishing issues. He exhibits now all over the world, and is acknowledged as one of the greatest painter-etchers of his time. Until his decease in 2008, James Coignard was a prolific painter, sculptor and etcher and leaves behind an immense work.

Publisher GKM. Edition of 40 ex. Unframed. Carborundum engraving. Moulin de Larroque handmade paper. Free shipment worldwide. “With just a few strokes of his brush he conjures up an entire world. James Coignard extends the boundaries between concrete and abstract. He knows how to create chromatic melodies that shift in timbre from cobalt blue to blood red. His pictures are an artistic epicentre where lines, letters and numbers meld with vigorous swashes of colour.” That is how the writer Johan Persson has described the artist’s paintings. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. They came to represent him in Scandinavia and edited several volumes of his graphic works. It was not until 2003 that we at Galleri GKM Siwert Bergström...

Sigismond Kolos-Vari, 'Nets', color etching with soft-ground and aquatint, edition 200 (1 of 60 artist's proofs), 1952. Signed and dated in pencil. Numbered L/LX in pencil. A superb, richly-inked impression, on heavy, off-white, Arches wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 3 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Published by the Guide de la Gravure, Switzerland, with their blindstamp in the bottom left sheet corner. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Image size 11 3/4 x 15 5/8 inches (298 x 397 mm); sheet size 15 x 22 1/4 inches (381 x 565 mm). ABOUT THE ARTIST Sigismund Kolos-Vari was born in Hungary and attended the School of Applied Arts in Budapest from 1915 to 1918 and then the School of Decorative Arts until 1925. The artist settled in Paris, and his first one-person show in 1928 at Galerie Miromesnil, which was highly successful, led to numerous subsequent exhibitions, including with the prestigious Galerie Bonaparte in 1929 and Galerie Povolosky in 1930. Kolos-Vari’s early success was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of WWII when he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the Gurs internment camp. During this period, he created a sketchbook for a little girl, which is now preserved at the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris. He managed to escape after two years, crossing the border into Switzerland. After the war, he returned to Paris with a renewed dedication to his painting, producing increasingly powerful compositions. His work was highly acclaimed when shown at an important 1946 exhibition at the Musée National d’Art Moderne de Paris, organized by Jean Cassou. The artist was then approached by the eminent art dealer Jean Bucher, who gave Kolos-Vary a major one-person show at his gallery in 1948. During this post-war period, Kolos-Vary participated in the radical Salon de Mai, 1949-1958, the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, 1956-1961, and the Salon des Comparaisons, 1960-1962. Supported by his association with Stanley William Hayter and the landmark printmaking workshop Atelier 17...

Late 20th century carborundum engraving on handmade paper by French artist, James Coignard. In the late 1960s, Coignard exploited in particular the artistic medium of etching in carborundum (first created by Henri Goetz) . It was his tireless experimentation in the search for a new artistic medium that led him to the further development of etching on carborundum, a very time-consuming process. At the start of his career, Coignard became part of the 'realists' of the École de Paris . Although he was always searching for a way out of the modern art genre, his work always had a modern art vibe. Marcelin Pleynet , in 'James Coignard and the memory of signs', writes: “the work of James Coignard presents all the characteristics of a work belonging to the space of modern art […] the work of James Coignard seems curiously silent as soon as we try to compare it, to think about it, to understand it according to such or such conventional data." That is its essence. In 1948 , James Coignard discovered the Côte d'Azur and decided to take courses at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice. He then also received advice from Louis Marchand des Raux...

Title: Tête en ABCD (Head in ABCD) Date: 1977 Medium: Original carborundum etching in 6 colours Publisher: Vision Nouvelle Publisher, Paris. Edition : 75 + XV E.A. Number : 42/75 Paper : Moulin Larroque Pombié Image size : 19.5 x 15.75 in (50 x 40 cm) Paper size : 26.25 x 20.5 in (67 x 52 cm) Reference : Sonet n°315 Condition : Very good This carborundum etching is an excellent example of the art of James Coignard. The paper is very thick and textured. It is in very good condition. There are two hinges on the reverse, both museum quality, using water-based adhesive. James Coignard, painter, ceramist, sculptor and etcher, was born in Tours in 1925. At the age of 23 and after a brief career in the French administration, he discovered the landscapes of the French Riviera and decided to study at Arts décoratifs in Nice. Four years later, he quit his job at the administration to commit himself entirely to his artistic career. The encounter with Paul Hervieu in 1950 was decisive. His collaboration with gallery Hervieu made him known in artistic circles, nationally and internationally and then particularly in Scandinavia. At the beginning of his career, art critics labeled James Coignard as a member of Ecole de Paris. Soon, his painting and ceramic distanced themselves from those of his colleagues and he set out in his own creative direction. At the beginning of the sixties, he started to work with glass but the technical turning point occurred in 1968 when his friend Henri Goetz discovered a new etching technique, using carborundum. Etching then became central in his work. At the same time, his career took off internationally. He traveled a lot, especially to Sweden and USA where he lived for a few years. In 1978, James Coignard participated in the creation of the etching studio Pasnic, with which he started a long collaboration. During the eighties, he shared his time between Paris and the French Riviera and took an interest in artist’s books and publishing issues. He exhibited now all over the world, and was acknowledged as one of the greatest painter-etchers of his time. Until his death in 2008, James Coignard was a prolific painter, sculptor and etcher. He left behind an immense body of work.
