Jules Coignet Landscape Drawings and Watercolors

1798-1860

Jules Louis Philippe Coignet was born on November 2, 1798, in Paris and he died in Paris on 1st April 1860. He was a French painter of the School of Barbizon. Coignet was the pupil of Jean-Victor Bertin, he had the same taste as his master for landscape painting. He asserted his artistic sensibility by leaving the studio to paint from nature in a picturesque style, more visual and less stilted than the classic or romantic way of his predecessors. Coignet is the author of a large number of paintings depicting views and landscapes painted during his many travels in Tyrol and the country of Baden, Switzerland, Italy and Sicily, Egypt and Lebanon in the East, as well as in several provinces of France, notably Brittany and the Isère Valley. Coignet was made Knight of the Legion of Honor on April 30, 1836. Author of numerous paintings, pastel drawings and watercolors, Coignet also worked as a portrait painter. As a lithographer, he has also engraved and published several series of prints of his composition as well as other artists. In 1834–45, Coignet organized two public sales of his production, highly appreciated by art lovers. After his death, his workshop was dispersed in the public sale on April 8, 1861. Coignet's works are found in numerous Museums such as the National Gallery of Washington, Museum of Modern art of New York, the Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge, Louvre Museum in Paris and numerous Fine Arts Museums in France.

Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936 Artist: L W Rowe, 20th century Medium: watercolour on paper, unframed Size: 7 x 9.75 height x width in inches Signature: signed lower left, L W Rowe Date: dated lower right, 21-10-36 Stamped verso: no stamp visible from the images provided Provenance: private collection Condition: fair to good vintage condition. The sheet shows age toning, foxing, surface marks, handling wear and visible edge wear. There are losses, tears and old adhesive / mount marks to the reverse, particularly around the edges and corners. The painted image remains attractive, clear and highly decorative. Description: A charming signed watercolour by L W Rowe, dated 21-10-36, depicting two Highland cattle standing in a rural landscape. The cattle are shown in profile beneath bare trees, with soft fields, a pale path and distant countryside beyond. Their long horns, shaggy coats and strong silhouettes make them immediately recognisable as Highland cattle, giving the work excellent decorative and collectable appeal. The painting is especially attractive for its earthy palette and gentle pastoral atmosphere. The artist uses warm browns, ochres and deep umber tones to describe the animals’ coats, contrasting them with soft greens, muted greys and pale blue washes in the surrounding landscape. The darker Highland bull to the right gives the composition weight, while the warmer russet animal to the left introduces richness and texture. The handling is loose but observant, with the cattle carefully placed within a quiet countryside setting. The trees and background are painted with light, atmospheric washes, allowing the animals to remain the clear focus of the work. The date of 1936 gives the piece additional period interest, while the signed lower-left inscription helps distinguish it from a purely anonymous animal study. Highland cattle remain a highly popular subject in British and Scottish art, particularly for collectors drawn to rural landscapes, country house interiors, animal paintings, farming scenes and traditional countryside subjects. This watercolour would work especially well in a country home, kitchen, hallway, study, boot room or gallery wall of animal and landscape works. The sheet has visible age-related wear, including toning, foxing, edge losses, tears and old adhesive marks to the reverse, all consistent with a vintage work on paper. Despite this, the painted image remains appealing and decorative. Unframed and ready for sympathetic mounting, this is a characterful 1930s Highland cattle watercolour...

Title: English Village Cottages Country Landscape Watercolour Painting Artist: L W Rowe, 20th century Medium: watercolour on paper, unframed Size: 8.25 x 11.75 height x width in inches Signature: signed lower left, L W Rowe Stamped verso: not shown / no stamp visible from the image provided Provenance: private collection Condition: good overall vintage condition. The sheet shows light age toning, handling marks, surface wear and some edge wear, particularly to the lower and left edges. There are small losses / roughness to the paper edges visible in the photograph. The painted surface remains bright, attractive and decorative. Description: A charming signed watercolour by L W Rowe, depicting a peaceful English village landscape with cottages, trees, a low stone wall and rolling countryside beyond. The composition centres on a small group of traditional country cottages, their warm red, ochre and terracotta roofs set against soft green fields and a pale blue sky. A mature tree to the right and leafy garden foliage to the left frame the view, giving the scene a quiet rural atmosphere. The painting is particularly appealing for its warm colour and traditional country subject. Rowe uses soft, translucent watercolour washes to capture the pale sunlight, open road and surrounding landscape, while darker touches of green and brown bring definition to the trees, windows, wall and cottage roofs. The scene has an inviting, nostalgic quality, suggesting a village lane or rural hamlet in the English countryside. The cottages are the main focus of the composition, with their simple façades, small windows and varied rooflines giving the work strong architectural charm. The background hills add depth and a sense of place, while the open foreground gives the scene a calm, spacious feeling. It is a decorative and highly accessible example of a traditional 20th century British watercolour landscape. This piece would appeal to collectors of English village paintings...

The sheet shows light age toning, minor handling marks and some surface wear. There is slight edge wear and minor corner wear visible. The painted surface remains bright, attractive and highly decorative. Description: A charming 20th century British School watercolour depicting a peaceful village lane in Shere, Surrey, as inscribed to the reverse. The composition shows a quiet country road leading past trees, garden fencing and traditional village houses, with cottages partially hidden among the foliage. The scene has a gentle English village atmosphere, combining architectural charm with soft natural greenery. The painting is particularly appealing for its calm, observational quality. The artist uses transparent washes of green, brown, ochre and soft blue to capture the trees, hedgerows, sky and village buildings. The central trees create a natural canopy across the composition, while the pale road draws the eye into the scene and towards the cottages beyond. Small details such as the gate, fences, windows and varied rooflines add character without making the work feel overworked.
