Set of Six Directoire Mahogany Dining Chairs Attributed to Georges Jacob

By Georges Jacob

Located in Vancouver, British Columbia

A set of six period Directoire dining chairs carved in Honduras mahogany. Identical chairs are shown in the reference book "Ebenists of the 18th century". While unstamped, this set comes with written documentation and attribution to George Jacob by a leading antique dealer in Paris from where they were purchased. The chairs are very similar to a set in the dining room at Malmaison . Refer to last photo in the photo gallery . Georges Jacob (6 July 1739 – 5 July 1814) the most prominent furniture maker in 18th century Paris. He produced carved, painted and gilded beds and seat furniture and upholstery work for the French royal châteaux, in the Neoclassical style that is associated with Louis XVI furniture. In his workshop he employed numerous specialist carvers and gilders. In 1785, Jacob produced the first mahogany chairs à l'anglaise, for the Comte de Provence similar in many ways to the ones on offer here. When he retired in 1796, Georges Jacob left his workshop in the hands of his two sons, one of whom was François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter who went on to become a leading French Empire Furniture...

By Dom Hans van der Laan

Located in Utrecht, NL

This chair was originally designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect, Dom Hans van der Laan for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg located near the Dutch town of Vaals. This easy chair is in an untouched condition. It was made of pinewood and feature copper nails, giving this piece an understated, rustic look. The chair was entirely painted grey, including the nails. The main focus of van der Laan’s design was functionality and rationality, which is reflected in the openings on the sides and on the back that serves the purpose of joining multiple pieces together. This chair is a beautiful piece of Dutch design history. Although Dom van der Laan left a small body of work behind, his legacy is highly regarded in the world of architecture. The St. Benedictusberg Abbey in Vaals and its interior quickly became his masterpiece at the age of 53. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Item has some small marks and scratches. Dimensions: 21.2 in W x 20.8 in D x 37.4 in H 54 cm W x 53 cm D x 95 cm H About the designer: Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) was the ninth of the eleven recorded children of Leiden architect Leo van der...
