A rare and highly important Russian imperial period gilt-bronze mounted and marquetry inlaid, triple turn-over games table. St. Petersburg, circa 1820. This rare and elegant marquetry games table, or Lomberian, is representative of the golden age of Russian craftsmanship of the early nineteenth century. The table, in keeping with courtly pursuits of the day, has a triple turn-over top, opening successively to reveal a chess board and a leather playing surface for cards. The upper surface is veneered with exceptional marquetry inlay in stained sycamore, holly, boxwood, and Russian native timbers. It is centred by an oval roundel with a decorative and highly unusual still-life tableau of playing cards and dice. The distinctive form of the decorative marquetry inlay and the use of rich indigenous timbers confirm the Russian origin of this table. The flowering tendrils being a distinctive feature of the work of a small group of St Petersburg cabinet makers such as Nikifor Vasilyev and Matvei Veretennikov. Both of these master cabinet makers were serfs, Veretennikov belonging to Count Alexander Vasilievich Soltikov and Vassilyev belonging to the Sheremetev estate. It is interesting to note, that of the small number of known masterpieces by these makers, two of them are elaborately inlaid gaming tables, confirming its importance as a furniture type amongst the Upper Classes of the period. A highly important restoration period maple and Amaranth veneered console table with patinated bronze female term supports, made for King Louis-Philippe by Jean-Christophe Fischer. French, circa 1830. This rare console table has a rectangular marble top above a frieze with two drawers raised on finely cast patinated bronze female term supports, a mirrored back and a plinth base. The table is stamped ‘Fischer à Paris’ and with ‘LPN’ beneath a crown for Louis-Philippe Neuilly, and the number 13687. The locks stamped 'Huby Fils Serrurier a Paris'. This console table was formerly owned by Louis-Philippe, King of France, at the Château de Neuilly. Louis-Philippe, Duc d'Orléans, was born October 6, 1773 in Paris, the eldest son of Louis-Philippe-Joseph, Duc de Chartres. The Château de Neuilly was built for Marc-Pierre de Voyer d'Argenson. It was purchased in 1818 by Louis Philippe, who was then proclaimed King of the French on April 9, 1830. The château was looted and destroyed during the 1848 revolution. After his abdication, Louis-Philippe spent the last two years of his life in England. Jean-Christophe Fischer (1779-1854) was an important French ébéniste and bronzier, specialising in making furniture, mirrors and chairs. He had an established business in Paris from 1820 until his death in 1854. During this time he produced furniture for the King Louis Philippe, for his Château de Neuilly residency, amongst other important commissions. From 1820 to 1827 he was collaborating with Geoffrey Kopp under the name of Fisher and Kopp, he was then joined in 1839 by his son, who took over the company in 1848. In 1837 he participated in the Exposition de l'Industrie Francaise, where he exhibited a cylinder bureau, a table and a pair of consoles, winning a silver medal for his work. According to the Exhibition's report: "ses meubles se distinguaient autant par la perfection du travail que par l'élégance des formes; ils étaient en palissandre relevée seulement par des baguettes dorées ou en bois blanc. Un bureau a cylindre, une table de travail et deux consoles, nous ont paru les plus remarquables de l'Exposition." In 1844, he also participated in the Exposition de l'Industrie Francaise where he received a Gold Medal for his work with ebony and bronze. A pair of large and finely patinated bronze models of a standing bull and a running cow after models by Isidor-Jules Bonheur, Cast on a Naturalistic Base. French, circa 1890. Bonheur was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and his naturalistic depiction of farm animals, including cattle, was one of his most popular subjects. The bronze was cast by his brother-in-law, Hippolyte Peyrol, who ran one of the most successful art foundries in Paris at this time. Isidore-Jules Bonheur (1827-1901) was the son of the painter Raymond Bonheur and younger brother of Rosa Bonheur, the famous sculptor. He was born in Bordeaux and studied painting, at first with his father and then with the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, moving on to sculpture in 1848. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1848 with a painting and plaster study of the same subject ‘African horseman attacked by a lioness’. From then onwards, Bonheur exhibited regularly at the Salon as well as other exhibitions, winning medals in 1865 and 1869 together with the prized Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1895. Most of Bonheur’s casts were by his uncle by marriage, Hippolyte Peyrol, whose tiny foundry mark is often very difficult to find. Bonheur’s studies range from farm animals, bears and tigers in a very naturalistic vein to equestrian groups. Although noted primarily for his small groups he did complete two large scale commissions, one to his sister Rosa, at Fontainbleau and the other, two stone lions at the steps of the Royal...
