About the Item

An authentic and remarkably sculptural forged iron Saru-Menpo (monkey-face half mask / facial armor), dating to the mid-Edo period (18th century), Japan. Unlike conventional samurai masks covering the lower jaw, the Saru-Menpo was engineered to protect the forehead, temples, and cheeks, leaving an expressive open ocular aperture resembling a primate's facial silhouette. Crafted from hammered iron, this piece features finely articulated scalloped ear guards (fukikaeshi-style side flanges) with original mounting posts, showcasing exceptional metalworking and defensive functionality. With its striking, abstract silhouette and deep, aged iron patination, this mask transcends traditional weaponry, presenting as a powerful work of ancient sculptural art.
